Disturbing symptoms
Just at the beginning of this year, our lives were normal. In February, however, I started noticing something about our little son, Maks, that wouldn’t let me rest easy. First, his eyelids were drooping. Then he had trouble keeping his balance. Sometimes, saliva would drip from the corner of his mouth. These were small signs, but as a mom, I felt that something was wrong.
A flurry of tests, consultations, and follow-up visits with specialists began. Every day, we held onto the hope that we would hear good news. Unfortunately, the diagnosis turned out to be one of the hardest a parent can hear: diffuse infiltrating brainstem glioblastoma.
Treatment, Tests, Consultations
Treatment began immediately. Maks underwent radiation therapy combined with temozolomide. After the radiation treatments ended, chemotherapy continued. Every day was a struggle, filled with more tests, checkups, and the immense hope that the treatment would yield the best possible results.
The first glimmer of hope appeared in May. An MRI showed that the tumor had shrunk and that there had been a partial response to treatment. That gave us the strength to keep fighting. Today, we are consulting with specialists abroad and exploring every possible treatment that might help Maks.
Everyday life of a family
Maks is at home right now. However, every week they schedule hospital visits, tests, and the next stages of treatment. I’m with him all the time. I hold his hand when he’s scared. We talk and laugh whenever he has the strength, and I try to help him forget about his illness, even if just for a moment.
Maks’s dad balances his job every day with organizing his treatment and handling all the matters related to the fight for our son’s health. Maks has two adult brothers, Adam and Mikołaj, who shower him with immense support, care, and love.
Moments of joy
Although his illness robbed Maks of his carefree spirit, it did not take away his childlike curiosity about the world. On better days, he watches exotic insects with great interest and can listen for hours to stories about their extraordinary lives.
He’s also fascinated by robotics. It’s these little passions that help him, if only for a moment, to take his mind off the hospital wards and medical tests.
We need your support
Today, we live in great fear for our son’s future, but at the same time, we haven’t lost hope. We fight for every smile and every positive result our son achieves.
We still have a long road ahead of us. Medical treatment, consultations abroad, non-reimbursable therapies, and other expenses related to the illness are costs that far exceed our family’s means, which is why we are asking for your help with all our hearts.
Every bit of support gives us a chance to continue our son's treatment. Thank you for being there for us!
