The first day of March. I’ll remember this morning forever
That day, Kacperek woke up with severe pain in his groin. He could barely stand. We went to see our family doctor. The doctor confirmed that his groin lymph nodes were swollen, but said we should wait another day or two, as it might be a viral infection.
The next day, my son’s legs hurt a lot, but other than that, he wasn’t experiencing any other symptoms.
On March 3, he woke up with severe pain in his legs, spine, abdomen, and chest. We went to the hospital in Gorzów Wielkopolski. Kacperek was admitted to the ward and underwent tests.
On March 4, I heard the diagnosis: B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia.
I was told that an ambulance was already waiting for us and that we would be transported immediately to the teaching hospital in Szczecin.
In an instant, everything around me fell silent. I couldn’t understand why such a tragedy had befallen our little one.
Our daily life has moved to the hospital
Kacperek is currently undergoing chemotherapy. The treatment follows the AIEOP-BFM ALL protocol and is primarily administered at a hospital in Szczecin.
I’m with him all the time. Kacper’s dad stayed at home in Gorzów with our son and daughter. They try to visit us every week so we can see each other even for a moment and so they can bring us the essentials.

The illness changed the lives of our entire family
While my son is sick, I can’t work. I had to quit my job because I’m with Kacper at the hospital all the time. I don’t know if I’ll be able to go back to work in the next two years. We’re living on just one income. Kacper’s dad has also had to significantly cut back on his work because he has to take care of the house and our six-year-old son, who requires constant care and rehabilitation since he was diagnosed with aphasia.
Our mental state is very difficult. We try to support each other, but I can’t quite put into words what we’re feeling. The first things that come to mind are paralyzing fear, helplessness, and an overwhelming sense of despair. This year , our older son is starting first grade. I’m not there with him; I can’t be there for him.
My daughter is taking her high school graduation exams in two months. I won’t be there for her either.
Our family's world has suddenly come to a standstill. Our whole life is now focused on our little one's treatment.
Kacper's siblings are very upset about his illness
Our 19-year-old daughter was deeply affected by this. She was devastated and cried for a long time, but then she sprang into action because she knew someone had to help take care of her younger brother.
Our six-year-old son doesn’t quite understand what’s going on. We explain to him that his little brother is very sick and that we won’t be home for a long time. He misses us very much.
Every day we try to talk on the phone and video chat so we can at least be together that way. We explain to him that soon we’ll all be together again.

The hardest moments are those of helplessness
Every day , Kacper and I fight together for his health and life. It’s very emotionally draining. Sometimes I step out into the hospital hallway and cry out of helplessness.
Meanwhile, Kacper’s dad tries to keep the house in order and organize everything. He has to take our son to preschool, to therapy, and make it to work on time. Our older son has four to five hours of therapy a week, and it’s really hard to juggle it all. On top of that, there are constant trips to Szczecin just to see Kacper for a moment.
Kacperek is still just a little boy
Despite his illness, Kacperek is still our cheerful, curious little boy. He has a vivid imagination. Sometimes he lays out a paper keyboard—drawn by his brother—on the table, picks up an old corded phone, and pretends he’s working in an office or a restaurant. We’re supposed to place our orders, while his brother prepares our food in his wooden kitchen.
