Our son Janek was born in August 2024. However, just three hours after his birth, numerous petechiae appeared on his tiny body. The doctors immediately decided to transfer him to the Neonatal Pathology Unit in Zabrze.
He stayed there for the next six weeks. Tests confirmed severe thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and anemia. Instead of enjoying our first days together, we lived in fear and uncertainty, waiting for each new test result and the slightest sign of improvement.
Treatment
When Janek’s subsequent blood test results continued to raise concerns, the search for answers began. Genetic testing led to a diagnosis: a deletion in the RUNX1 gene, causing congenital thrombocytopenia.
Starting in June 2025, Janek had to receive platelet transfusions every week because his platelet count kept dropping to zero. After a year, he began receiving treatment through the drug program and N-plate injections, but unfortunately, they had no effect. The medication didn’t work.
Bone marrow transplant
With weekly platelet transfusions and ineffective N-plate treatment, the only option that offers Janek a chance at a normal life is a bone marrow transplant. In May, a donor was found for Janek, and the transplant took place on June 17, 2026.
Today, Janek is in the transplant unit at a hospital in Wrocław, where he is bravely fighting every day to recover.
Ordinary Moments
Despite all the difficulties, Janek is, above all, an ordinary, cheerful boy. He loves dogs, toy cars, and vacuum cleaners. He can play with his favorite toys for hours, discovering the world in his own childlike way.
Janek has four siblings who miss him very much. Every moment they spend together is priceless to them: full of laughter, fun, and joy—which they need so much after their time in the hospital.
We need your support
Janek’s illness has changed our whole family’s life. As he continues his treatment, he needs constant care, which is why I won’t be able to return to work. Today, there’s one thing that matters most to us: being there for Janek and supporting him every day.
We are unable to cover all of the expenses related to Janek’s treatment on our own. We wholeheartedly ask for your support. Every bit of help and every kind word gives us hope that Janek will be able to focus on what childhood should be all about: play, smiles, and carefree exploration of the world.
