Update

The weeks following the transplant
It has been six weeks since the transplant. We're slowly starting to believe that things are looking up. Following the transplant, complications arose in the form of VOD, or veno-occlusive disease of the liver. This is one of the more serious complications that can occur after a bone marrow transplant. Consequently, treatment with the specialized medication Defitelio was initiated. Fortunately, the situation is beginning to stabilize. We have now been transferred to the post-transplant ward, which is a very important step forward for us. For over a week now, she has been going out for short walks and has started physical therapy because her shoulder girdle is very weak. He is still receiving platelet transfusions because his platelet count has not yet stabilized at a safe level. We are now waiting to see how the situation develops and for further research results. Here is a message from Halinka’s parents, who are sharing the latest updates on their 9-month-old daughter’s treatment.
" After 11 weeks of treatment A quick decision was made in Rzeszów the decision to continue treatment at Cape of Hope in Wrocław. Wednesday was the day we packed up and cleaned our hospital room. On Thursday morning, February 26, a special ambulance transported Halinka to Cape of Hope. We are now 460 kilometers away from home. More tests, new decisions, and the next steps lie ahead. Doctors explain the possible treatment options and complications in great detail. This is information that Sometimes they can make their parents' hair stand on end, but we know there's no other way. All of our loved ones are doing everything they can for little Halinka. Halinka's sister was selected as a bone marrow donor. On March 9, Hania was at Cape of Hope tests that confirmed compliance. Our six-year-old Hania is now Halinka’s greatest hope. March 11 was a day we will always remember. The transplant began at 2:07 p.m. For our family, this marks Halinka’s symbolic rebirth. We are in the best of hands and under the care of wonderful professors. However, we know that We have many long months of isolation and recovery ahead of us. We look forward to the next chapter of this story. Keep your fingers crossed for us! - Halinka's parents March 13, 2026

"I looked at her and didn't understand. How was that possible, when she looked like a healthy child?"
Beginning without warning

Halinka was a healthy, normally developing infant. Five months of ordinary life, without any worrying signs, without any cause for concern. On the day of the diagnosis, her mother came to the clinic with a trivial matter, mild diarrhea from the previous day. During the examination, the pediatrician felt a lump under her left rib cage. One touch. One decision to refer her to the emergency room. From that moment on, everything began to unfold at a pace that was impossible to comprehend.

Diagnosis in a few hours

Emergency room, ultrasound scan, blood count. The results were completely at odds with the image of a smiling, babbling infant. A significantly enlarged spleen, hyperleukocytosis, dramatically low hemoglobin. Within two hours, Halinka was admitted to the pediatric oncohematology ward. The diagnosis was made almost immediately. Type B lymphoblastic leukemia with KMT2A gene rearrangement.

Saving lives from day one

On the first day, a biopsy was performed and a vascular port was inserted. After returning from the operating room, Halinka received life-saving chemotherapy. During the night , a four-hour exchange transfusion was performed, followed by a platelet transfusion. Everything happened so fast that her consciousness could not keep up with reality. This was not a treatment spread out over time. It was putting out a fire that had raged in her blood.

Treatment takes strength

After two weeks, the port was replaced with a Broviac. Further biopsies were performed on the fifteenth and thirty-third days of chemotherapy. Each day brought new procedures and new fears . Halinka has been in the hospital with her mother for five weeks. Treatment is being carried out in accordance with the Interfant-21 protocol. Steroid therapy and chemotherapy are already underway. She will undergo Blincyto immunotherapy, followed by a bone marrow transplant.

The effects of the treatment on her body are already visible. Due to reduced muscle tone, Halinka cannot roll onto her stomach, hold up her head, or lift it. Skills that should develop naturally have been stunted by her illness and treatment.

Separated family

Mom is with Halinka all the time. Dad has taken over the house and care of the older daughters. He quit his job because everyday life required his presence here and now. Six-year-old Hania and four-year-old Helenka have seen their mom and sister only twice since the beginning of the illness. Sanitary restrictions do not allow for more.
Hania misses her sister, who was the apple of her eye. Helenka asks if she can live in the hospital so that Halinka won't be sad.

Soon, this separation will become even more profound. A bone marrow transplant means traveling to Wrocław, hundreds of kilometers from home. Months away from familiar surroundings. Even more challenging logistics, even greater tension.
