Abnormal test results
It all started innocently enough. In 2024, I was referred for a blood test. Just a routine checkup—no big deal. However, the results clearly indicated anemia. A year later, further tests showed that my hemoglobin and ferritin levels had dropped again. Soon after, I noticed blood in my stool. My primary care physician became very concerned about my health, so he referred me for a colonoscopy. Then came more tests. I felt that something was wrong. My body had been trying to tell me something for a long time. Finally, the diagnosis was delivered—words I wasn’t ready to hear. Malignant colorectal cancer with a KRAS mutation and metastases to the lymph nodes.
Complications
In August 2025, I underwent an anterior rectal resection. At the time, I hoped that the worst was behind me. My body, however, had other plans. Many complications arose. Not just after the surgery. The subsequent radiation therapy and chemotherapy also caused side effects in my body. Pain became a daily reality, and movement a challenge. There are parts of my body where I have no sensation. I have severe polyneuropathy and gynecological issues. In addition to these complications, many others have arisen. My body is no longer as functional as it once was. Every day, I’m learning to live with myself all over again.
Longing for the past
My illness has kept me from moving forward. Today, most of my life takes place at home, where the days pass much more slowly. I’m not alone in all this. My husband and daughter are very supportive. Their presence means the world to me. I often find myself thinking back to the past. To movement, space, and freedom. To sports, which gave me strength. To my beloved horseback riding. I loved playing with my daughter outdoors; we’d run and laugh together. I miss that so much.
Request for support
My life has come to a standstill somewhere between the diagnosis and the daily struggle with its effects. Every day is a challenge, both mentally and physically. Although I try to stay strong for myself, my husband, and my daughter, there are moments when I simply run out of strength. But I keep fighting. Day by day, second by second. Today, I’m asking for your support. With it, I’ll be closer to the world I knew before the cancer appeared. Every bit of support brings me closer to recovery.
