January 22
It was a day I’ll never forget. On the night of January 21–22, Basia started complaining of severe stomach pain. A few hours earlier, we’d been to the doctor, and she’d said that Basia was coming down with another infection.
However, the stomach pain that started in the evening really worried me. I sat with Basia all night. I gave her painkillers. I didn't get a wink of sleep.
On the morning of January 22, we went to the doctor again. The tests showed that Basia has an enlarged
liver, spleen, and elevated CRP. We were referred to the hospital. Things happened very quickly there. I remember the moment when the doctor said that her blood count was very low and that my daughter would need a blood transfusion. At that moment, I felt as if someone had squeezed my heart in their hand.
That very same day, as an emergency, we were rushed to Cape of Hope in Wrocław. There, time stood still. More tests, many unanswered questions, and endless waiting. Finally, the diagnosis was made: acute lymphoblastic leukemia, type B. I remember the silence that fell after those words. At that moment, I felt as though everything around me had ceased to exist.
Many complications
Treatment began at the end of January. Basia started her first round of chemotherapy in the Intensive Care Unit. It was all very unfamiliar, difficult, and overwhelming. After the first round, they transferred Basia to the regular Hematology ward for a short while. I thought then that maybe the worst was behind us. Unfortunately, it was just a brief respite.
We quickly returned to the OWN ward because a Broviac catheter infection had developed, leading to sepsis. The fear came back with a vengeance. I remember sitting by Basieńka’s bedside and watching her fight. So tiny, yet so brave.
The doctors managed to get the situation under control, and after a week we returned to the Hematology ward. In mid-April, Basia will finish her second round of chemotherapy. After that, she developed another Broviac infection, and the central line had to be removed again.
Longing
We’re still confined to the four walls of a hospital room. Isolation has become our daily reality. I can see how much Basia misses her normal life.
She also misses her three-year-old brother Piotr and her friends from preschool.
My husband visits us whenever he can. Each visit is a brief moment of normalcy that gives us strength, even though nothing is the way it used to be. Our whole family has pitched in to help. We also have the support of friends, acquaintances, and neighbors. We are incredibly grateful to them.
Little Artist
Our Basia loves to create. Cutting out shapes, drawing, and making bracelets are her favorite pastimes.
The house was always full of her. She brought so much joy and laughter into our daily lives. Even now, while she’s in the hospital, despite our sadness, that spark is still there.
Request for support
Basia still has many months of treatment ahead of her. Unfortunately, the life we knew up until now is a thing of the past. Basia’s treatment has become our top priority, so we’ve cut back on work.
Our daily responsibilities have taken a back seat. Now, only one thing matters: our little girl’s recovery.
