A routine blood test revealed a rare disease.
At the end of July 2025, Zosia had a follow-up blood test. The results that appeared on the printout surprised everyone with their sharp deviation from the norms. There were no symptoms, no signs in the girl's everyday behavior that would explain such profound deviations.
The diagnosis of thrombocytopenia was made immediately, and with it came the decision to urgently refer Zosia to the hospital in Luban. From there, she was transported by ambulance to Przylądek Nadziei (Cape of Hope) in Wrocław. The pace of diagnosis was dizzying, and each subsequent step brought the family closer to an answer they were not prepared for.
The clinic performed an extended blood count, conducted further tests, and took a bone marrow sample. For a brief moment, the parents hoped that perhaps there had been a mistake, that something had been misread, that there was another explanation. That hope vanished in a second when the results revealed a mutation in the ERCC6L2 gene—a rare, unpredictable disease requiring immediate chemotherapy.
The parents were shocked. Zosia looked and behaved like a healthy, energetic child. A year earlier, tests had shown no abnormalities. And yet now the diagnosis stood before them like an abyss that opens suddenly and without warning, revealing a darkness filled only with fear and questions to which there were no easy answers.
The road to transplantation
In February 2026, Zosia will undergo a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor, her only chance to stop the progression of the disease and give her body a chance to rebuild itself. The ten-year-old girl now lives according to a schedule determined by her visits to Cape of Hope, where she returns every week for blood tests to monitor her platelet count and overall physical condition.
It is a period of constant tension, because each result becomes an answer to one, but the most important question: does Zosia maintain the stability necessary to safely undergo the transplant procedure?
In this everyday life, there can be no certainty. There is only waiting, cautious hope, and fear, which accompanies them every day of preparation.
Illness changes everything
The illness forced changes in the whole family's life. Dad now works closer to home so that he can accompany Zosia during her treatment. Mom takes care of the house and her sick daughter, trying to create a semblance of normality for her.
Ula, Zosia's older sister, although she already lived separately, returned to her family home to support her sister and parents. The other siblings also help as much as they can. It is their common struggle, a daily effort built on love, fear, and quiet hope.
Every day is lined with fear
Zosia suffers from hypothyroidism and insulin resistance, and now she has to face a disease whose consequences no one can predict.
The biggest challenge for the family is the constant fear of what tomorrow will bring. They constantly ask themselves whether Zosia's body will be able to cope with the treatment and how long it will take her to recover after the transplant.
Zosia's World
Zosia loves dancing, acting, singing, painting, and fashion. Her world has always been colorful, full of expression, energy, and creative passion. Illness invaded it at the moment when Zosia was developing most beautifully.
The family is doing everything they can to save at least part of that space, although it is not easy in hospital conditions. Every gesture, every moment, every attempt to restore a little normality to Zosia becomes an act of love and a fight for her inner light.
Zosia faces a transplant and long months of treatment. The family needs support to get through this time with strength and hope. Every donation is a real help, and every gesture of kindness is proof to them that they are not alone in this fight.
