"Save me, Mom!"...
It was a normal evening, Tymofiy was watching cartoons. Suddenly, he turned pale and said, "Mom, I feel sick, my head is spinning..."
"I don't know why, but his strange symptoms scared me a lot," says Tymek's mother.
The boy said he felt sick, that he was dizzy, and he was very pale. Then he started crying and said:
Tymofey's mother called a doctor she knew. However, the doctor said that it was probably nothing serious, that it was likely a panic attack. Tymka's mother tried several more times to ask doctors to perform an MRI, because her intuition and that of the doctor told her that something terrible was happening. However, she was told that these were panic attacks and that her son needed a psychiatric consultation, not a neurological diagnosis.
The symptoms returned for two years. They became like a shadow that could not be shaken off. Tymofiy, although only a few years old, asked about cancer treatment, as if his intuition was trying to save him.
In 2024, everything took a dramatic turn. Headaches, nystagmus, vomiting, fear of getting up. The boy clung to his parents as if he was afraid that if he let go of them, he would never return. When a CT scan was performed in Wałbrzych, the world stopped. A cerebellar tumor with a diameter of six centimeters.
From Wałbrzych, they were taken to Wrocław, and then by medical plane to Warsaw. The diagnosis was like a death sentence.
High-risk medulloblastoma. Metastases to the pituitary gland and spinal cord. Hydrocephalus. A disease that takes children's lives in a matter of months.
An operation for a life that hung in the balance
On February 17 , the boy was taken to the operating room. His parents followed behind his bed, silently praying that he would still be alive when the doors closed behind him. The operation lasted five hours. Only eighty percent of the tumor could be removed. The rest was too deep.
Severe bulbar syndrome has been diagnosed.
The hellish hospital environment that became their daily reality
Oncology became their home. The corridors, filled with the sound of children crying and their parents' whispered prayers, will never cease to echo in their minds.
Tymofii underwent four cycles of intensive chemotherapy. His body grew weaker by the day. His hair fell out in handfuls.
For six months, Tymofii hardly left the hospital. He only managed to return home twice for a short stay.
Daily rehabilitation was like trying to rebuild a child from scratch. "Our beloved physiotherapist put her whole heart into her work with Tymek," recalls his mother. And yet a miracle happened! After four months, the boy stood up and took his first steps. In June, he said his first word since the operation, which was "mama."
Radiotherapy, blood infection, and fear that returned even stronger
Radiotherapy ended in July. Instead of bringing peace, it brought another blow. Blood infection."He was fading away before our eyes. I was afraid we would lose him," says his mother. "But thanks to the doctors and God, we got through it all."
The beginnings of supportive chemotherapy were also difficult: Tymek first had a fever, then vomiting and incomprehensible neurological symptoms. That's when Tymek ended up at Cape of Hope. An MRI showed that the tumor had grown by two millimeters. "RECURRENCE!" – his mother was told. "That word broke us into pieces again. We had no more tears left, only fear," say his parents. However, after consulting with radiologists from the Children's Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw, the doctors concluded that the difference in size was caused by the examination being performed on a different device.
"Tymek and I faced many other challenges in our difficult battle with cancer —infections related to reduced immunity, replacement of a vascular port, and many other things that no child should ever have to experience," says his mother.
Tymek is a very brave fighter who dreams of regaining his health and fitness. He never complains and always cooperates with doctors and nurses. The boy is currently in Wrocław, undergoing maintenance chemotherapy. It is a constant struggle, where every day can tip the scales in one direction or the other. Recently, Tymofii asked his father about death.
Tymek loves animals and dreams of becoming a veterinarian like his mother.
A family in a state of constant alert
Four children. The illness of one of them destroys the entire world they knew.
The older siblings try to support their parents with household chores to give them a moment's respite. Every aspect of life is now subordinated to the illness of one child. The biggest challenge, apart from the illness itself, is profound hearing loss. Hearing aids cost PLN 28,000. In addition, after the operation, Tymek has lost his balance and needs daily rehabilitation. On top of that, there are medications, diet, and transportation. Everything necessary for the boy to see, at least for a moment, a world without pain.
