When ordinary symptoms cease to be ordinary
In September 2025, symptoms appeared that sound familiar in the world of childhood infections: cough, runny nose and increasing fatigue. The family doctor diagnosed pneumonia and implemented antibiotic therapy, but despite the following days of treatment, Zosia's condition did not improve, and daily life began to be filled with anxiety.
On October 22, a chest X-ray was performed. The result changed everything. The photo revealed a tumor mass in the mediastinum, and Zosia and her mother were immediately referred to a specialized hospital in Rybnik. A CT scan revealed an image no one expected: an extensive tumor of the upper mediastinum measuring 11 x 9.2 cm, descending toward the lower structures, compressing the superior vena cava, the pulmonary trunk and the vessels and bronchi of the left lung. Three retrosternal lesions were also found, with the largest reaching 44 x 30 x 46 mm. It was a diagnosis that fell suddenly, taking away the family's ability to prepare for what was to come.
Confirmation of the disease and the beginning of treatment
On October 30, a trepanobiopsy was performed and bone marrow was harvested to determine the full extent of the disease. In the following days, Zosia was qualified for treatment according to the EuroNet PHL-C2 protocol, determining stage IIA and therapeutic level TL-2. On November 15, she began chemotherapy, and from then on, her life has been subordinated to the rhythm of treatment, which requires constant attentiveness, isolation and regular checks.
During her treatment, Zosia is staying in the Oncology, Hematology and Chemotherapy Department of the GCZD in Katowice, Poland, away from everything that was a natural part of her daily life.
Illness takes away a beloved world
Before her illness, Zosia was a child full of energy and creative expression. She danced at the Przygoda Educational and Artistic Ensemble in Rybnik, participated in international dance festivals and effortlessly combined dancing with bicycle trips, singing and artwork. She was present among friends, always smiling, always ready for another active afternoon.
The disease took this world away from her immediately. Because of the risk of infection, she has to avoid contact with her peers, doesn't go to school and can't participate in training, which until now filled her life with joy. She misses her friends, the movement, the stage and her dog, who is waiting for her at home. She is accompanied by dizziness, lack of appetite, fear of more procedures and fear of losing her hair, the symbolic weight of which is particularly acute for a girl her age.
Her younger sister, Helenka, is also trying to find her way in this new reality, in which Zosia's illness sets the rhythm of the whole house.
Family at the center of the struggle
Zosia's parents accompany her every step of her treatment, trying to balance home, work and caring for their younger child.
Not only does Zosia need treatment, but she also needs to be present, to be calm and to feel that the disease is not taking the world away from her completely.
Help is needed
The treatment process requires the purchase of unreimbursed medications, regular visits to specialists, psychological assistance, rehabilitation and constant transportation to the hospital. Funds are also needed for the medical equipment and care that Zosia must receive during chemotherapy. These are costs that far exceed the family's means.
