Disturbing symptoms
At the beginning of this year, my son, Witek, started feeling strange. He began experiencing dizziness, weakness, and a lack of energy for the things that used to bring him joy. This worried me greatly. The pediatrician ordered blood tests, but the results were not cause for concern.
At the end of January, my son suddenly started vomiting, so we immediately drove to the hospital in Opole. There, he underwent an MRI of his head. I’ll never forget the moment I heard that the doctors had found several tumors in my son’s head.
We were rushed to the hospital in Katowice. Further tests brought more devastating news: the disease had spread throughout my head and down my spinal canal. At that moment, my world came to a standstill; I couldn’t bring myself to accept the news.
Urgent decisions and diagnosis
Everything happened very quickly at the hospital. On January 23, Witek underwent a ventriculoperitoneal shunt implantation procedure to treat his hydrocephalus, and three days later, the doctors removed most of one of the tumors.
Serious complications arose after the surgery. My little boy stopped speaking, lost the use of all four limbs, and communication with him became very limited. I looked at my child and asked myself: why him?
Then came the diagnosis: medulloblastoma. A malignant brain tumor.
A difficult time
Chemotherapy and radiation therapy have severely weakened my son’s body. His treatment is still ongoing, and we already know that Witek has a long and very intensive rehabilitation process ahead of him.
Today, my son uses a wheelchair and needs help with every single task, no matter how small. Witek has also been living with autism since childhood. Everything we’d managed to build up over the years fell apart in an instant. He often cries and gets upset; he doesn’t understand what’s going on around him.
Our everyday life
Today, Witek is in the hospital in Kraków, where his dad is there for him every day; he had to quit his job and take time off work to be with his son. I’m pregnant and due in two weeks, so I can’t be with Witek in person.
We also have a 7-year-old daughter who is having a very hard time coping with her brother’s illness. She misses him, worries about him, and doesn’t understand why our lives have suddenly changed.
Witek's Fight
Before he fell ill, Witek had a little passion of his own: trains. He could spend hours watching them, gazing at them in awe. Today, he is facing the reality of the hospital—a reality no child is ever ready for.
This is a very difficult time for the whole family. Every day brings uncertainty, exhaustion, and tears, and arranging trips to the hospital and the rising costs are becoming an increasingly difficult challenge.
I humbly ask for your support for my son in this difficult battle for his health.
