First symptoms
It started with weakness, pale lips, reluctance to walk, and enlarged lymph nodes. Initially, mumps was suspected, and subsequent diagnoses concerned upper respiratory tract infections. Treatment proceeded in this direction, but the child's prolonged condition prompted doctors to refer Mia to a hospital ward in Łódź for further diagnosis.
The diagnosis was confirmed within the first 24 hours: acute lymphoblastic leukemia type B.
Fighting for life in the intensive care unit
After resuscitation, Mia was placed in a medically induced coma, and treatment began immediately, with chemotherapy and blood transfusions to sustain the vital functions of her devastated body.
At the beginning of April , the girl woke up spontaneously, but a few days later, due to increasing respiratory problems, it was necessary to put her back into a coma. She woke up again on April 23.
Mia's body was extremely exhausted at the time. Serious breathing difficulties threatened her safety, and at her lowest point, she weighed only nine kilograms.
In May, she underwent a tracheotomy to enable her to breathe freely. All these events took place in the intensive care unit, where the fight for her life continued for many long weeks.
Cancer treatment
In June 2024, Mia was transferred to the oncology ward, where treatment according to the reduced-risk protocol began. Intensive chemotherapy ended in November, and in December, the girl moved on to the maintenance phase of treatment. Over the following months, there was cautious hope for stabilization.
At the end of August 2025, the disease returned.
The biopsy showed 57% blasts. The leukemia proved resistant to chemotherapy.
After specialist consultations , doctors decided to implement immunotherapy, a modern method that uses the immune system to fight disease. For 28 days, Mia was continuously connected to the equipment administering the drug. After a short return home, another equally intensive cycle of therapy began.
After completing the preparatory stage for the transplant, the girl was transported to the Przylądek Nadziei Clinic in Wrocław.
On January 13, 2026, she began her stay in the transplant ward. During this time, she underwent six days of radiation therapy, and on January 31, she received a bone marrow transplant. The marrow has begun to function, but it is still too early to make a final assessment of the treatment's effectiveness. Mia remains in isolation, with her father constantly at her side.
Complications of treatment
Intensive care left serious consequences. The girl was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and heart damage, third-degree laryngeal damage, and vision impairment requiring permanent correction.
Isolation, longing, and constant worry
The illness has disrupted the family's daily life. Dad stays with Mia around the clock in the hospital ward, far from their family home in Łódź, where mom takes care of her siblings, including a seven-month-old baby.
Milena, Dorian, Natalia, Letycja, and Tymon are waiting for the girl to return and miss her dearly. Every day of this separation is a difficult experience for them in every aspect of their lives.
Despite prolonged isolation, fatigue, and constant fear for their child's life, the family tries to maintain balance and mutual closeness. It has been two years since their lives became subordinated to Mia's treatment. Each new day brings hope, but requires unprecedented strength.
