First, there were some worrying symptoms
The symptoms first appeared around 2023. At first, it was difficult to definitively link the signals her body was sending to a serious illness. Over time, however, subsequent tests began to paint a troubling picture, ultimately leading to a diagnosis of malignant cancer of the renal pelvis and ureter.
In April 2025, Barbara underwent surgery to remove her right kidney.
That diagnosis wasn't the final one
Following the surgery, the next phase of diagnosis and treatment began. In August, an endoscopic procedure was performed, and deep biopsies were taken from the bladder wall. The examination confirmed the presence of a tumor several centimeters in size. The diagnosis was clear: malignant bladder cancer.
From December 2025 to February 2026, Barbara underwent BCG treatment. The therapy was intended to halt the progression of the disease and slow its advance. Unfortunately, subsequent tests revealed further metastases.
Preparations for the next operation
An anesthesiology consultation is scheduled for April in Katowice, prior to further surgical treatment. The patient’s body is already under significant strain from previous treatment and numerous comorbidities. Each subsequent stage of treatment requires increasing strength.
Barbara is dealing with chronic heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, eye conditions, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, among other health issues. Such serious conditions further complicate her treatment and make every step of the way an even greater challenge.
The hardest things are the everyday tasks
Barbara is currently at home. Her daughter provides her with tremendous support in her daily activities, helping her with many everyday tasks. The effects of her illness are felt in almost everything she does. Moving around requires effort, and even the simplest tasks—including those related to personal hygiene—often require assistance from another person.
Mental health is also a significant factor. A long-term illness, successive stages of treatment, and mounting fatigue have led to depression, which saps the strength and determination so essential in the fight for health.
