Pain
At first, Amelka was still in good spirits. She played as usual, smiled, and tried to go about her day as she always did. After a few days, her condition suddenly took a turn for the worse. My fear grew stronger and stronger. I didn’t wait a moment longer. I took Amelka to the hospital in Lubań.
That very same day, the doctors ran a series of tests. The results turned out to be alarming, and her blood count was below normal. Amelka received a blood and platelet transfusion. She was then quickly transported to a clinic in Wrocław. That’s when I felt that our lives were about to change.
We have a difficult time ahead of us
The doctors informed me of the diagnosis very quickly. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She also received her first dose of chemotherapy at that time. The first treatment cycle will last 33 days. I know we have a difficult time ahead of us, which is why I want to be with her in the hospital the whole time and be able to hold her hand. In May, the doctors plan to perform a bone marrow biopsy. The results will determine the course of further treatment.
The sad reality
I’m not working. I’m with Amelka all the time, and I only go home occasionally—literally just for a moment. My partner is taking care of his sick parents and doesn’t have a steady job either. We try to support each other as best we can. Whenever we can, we talk on the phone and give each other strength. In this new daily life, there’s also our 16-year-old son, who’s struggling with his little sister’s illness and asks about Amelka every day.
Small, everyday joys
Amelka has always had a bit of an artist in her. She loves drawing with crayons and playing with modeling clay and playdough. When she puts together a puzzle, she does so with great concentration and joy, as if every piece that fits into place were a small victory. But what brings her the most joy are animals, especially dogs. That’s why she loves the cartoon “Paw Patrol” so much.
Sadness has become a daily companion for us
Today, my little girl isn’t smiling as much as she used to. She’s lying in bed looking sad and asking when we’ll go home. She doesn’t understand what’s happening, and I don’t know what to tell her. The diagnosis was something we weren’t prepared for. The treatment is long and very demanding, and the costs associated with the illness are enormous.
