Fighting for every breath
Last December, it all started with a dry, persistent cough and shortness of breath. At first, I chalked it up to the season and a common cold. But it got worse every day. Every breath became an effort, and breathing was no longer natural.
Suspecting pneumonia, I went to see a doctor immediately. The tests were done quickly. I remember the doctor’s expression and the moment of silence that fell over the office. It turned out that my lymph nodes had spread throughout my chest, and my body was in a state of severe hypoxia.
The beginning of the battle
The tests went on and on. When I was finally called into the doctor’s office, I could feel my heart beating faster and faster, as if it already knew the answer. The diagnosis was delivered: acute T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia. The weight of those words was overwhelming.
A difficult reality
Today, I have undergone four cycles of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. Each stage of treatment took a tremendous toll on my body. Just when it seemed like the worst was behind me, new health issues arose. One of the complications was high blood pressure, which requires constant monitoring and treatment.
Longing for the past
Before I received my diagnosis, my curiosity about the world kept me from standing still. I was always on the move. Sports gave me energy and a sense of strength, and books opened up worlds to me that I always wanted to return to. I enjoyed growing and trying new things. Crafts taught me patience, and cooking allowed me to discover new flavors. Every day was more than just a repetitive routine. It’s only now that I understand how much one can long for the ordinary.
The daily grind
Between cycles, I go home—to the place that used to be my everyday life. My partner is waiting for me there; she’s by my side and supports me every day. But I can see what a heavy burden this is for her, too.
Another uncertainty has arisen: finances. The fact that I can’t work means that the battle for my health isn’t the only one I’m fighting.
