Leg pain
During last year’s summer vacation, my son Mateusz started having pain in his leg. I thought it was just a case of overuse, nothing serious, and that the pain would go away in a few days and we’d forget all about it. However, the discomfort persisted, and his leg swelled up significantly. All these symptoms made it impossible for my son to move around normally.
The doctor took the situation very seriously. He ordered one test after another in quick succession, and each new referral made us more and more anxious. We felt a profound sense of helplessness and fear of what we might hear.
Diagnosis, Surgery, and Side Effects
Shortly thereafter, we received our son’s diagnosis: osteosarcoma with metastases (META) to the lungs. Since then, Mateusz has undergone surgery to remove the tumor from his left femur, followed by reconstruction with an artificial joint. He has also undergone several thoracotomies.
Treatment according to the standard protocol has now been completed. However, due to the metastases, the doctors decided to administer several additional cycles of chemotherapy. This has led to a number of flu-like side effects, such as fatigue and a runny nose.
In addition, my son is struggling with obesity and is under the care of a diabetes specialist.
A New Reality
Before my son fell ill, I worked and lived in Ustka. Because of his health, I quit my job so I could be with him all the time at the Mother and Child Institute in Warsaw, where he is receiving treatment.
Mateusz's dad works abroad to provide for his family in this new reality.
Mateusz's Interests
Before he got sick, my son loved playing soccer and was always watching his favorite players. He watched games and cheered them on faithfully. In his quieter moments, he played video games and built with LEGO bricks, and in the evenings he usually listened to his favorite music.
Please support me
Everyday life is very difficult these days.
My son misses his normal life, misses his dad, and feels constant stress. The costs of his treatment are getting higher and higher, and we can’t afford them on our own, so I’m asking for your help during these difficult times. We’ll be immensely grateful for any support and every kind word.
