First, there was a brain tumor. Then came years of treatment, dozens of surgeries, and an attempt to rebuild her life after an illness that robbed Marysia of her health, mobility, and a peaceful childhood. We thought the hardest part was behind us. Unfortunately, we received another diagnosis: malignant bone cancer. Today, Marysia has had her right leg amputated and is fighting to regain as much independence as possible.

The first tumor appeared when Marysia was two years old

In 2018, Marysia started vomiting and having trouble with her balance. She was only two years old at the time. Tests revealed that the cause was medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor. From that moment on, our lives revolved around hospitals, treatments, and surgeries for years. Marysia underwent dozens of procedures in Lublin and Rome.

After her first illness, Marysia is now facing intellectual disabilities, a growth hormone deficiency, and limitations in her daily functioning. We tried to rebuild our lives. We wanted to believe that cancer would never return to our home.

Another diagnosis

In March 2025, we noticed a lump on Marysia’s thigh. After the tests, we heard words that no parent should ever have to hear—and we heard them for the second time. The fear we knew all too well returned. Marysia had to undergo treatment again. Her right leg had to be amputated.

Further treatment

Marysia is currently undergoing treatment in Rome. She is now in the 7th cycle of chemotherapy out of the planned 10, although doctors have not ruled out the possibility of additional cycles.

Now that her treatment is complete, we would like to continue Marysia’s care in Warsaw. Ahead of us lie rehabilitation, prosthetics, and the ongoing struggle to help our daughter regain as much independence as possible. Unfortunately, this is a long and costly process.

Our family lives between Poland and Rome

To be with Marysia, we moved to Rome. Her younger sister is here with us; because of this situation, she isn’t attending preschool. Our older daughter stayed in Poland. Every day revolves around treatment, commutes, online learning, rehabilitation, and care. Marysia’s illness is also taking a heavy toll on her sisters. The younger one lives in the shadow of the treatment, and the older one is afraid of going through it all a second time.
