The pain came on suddenly, after a normal day at school. Marcelina’s left arm started to hurt as if she had simply overexerted herself or bumped it while playing. None of us thought at the time that this would be the beginning of her battle with cancer.
It all started with pain in my hand
In October 2023, Marcelina came home from school and started complaining of pain in her arm. It was just another Friday: a typical return home and a pain that, in a child, is so easily explained away as the result of playing or overexertion during PE class. But this wasn’t just any pain.
After the MRI, we were referred to the Mother and Child Institute in Warsaw. There, a biopsy of my left radius was performed. The result was a shock: Ewing’s sarcoma.
The treatment was intended to stop the disease
Marcelina began intensive treatment. She underwent nine cycles of preoperative chemotherapy. Each subsequent hospital stay brought fear, weakness, tests, IVs, and the anxiety of waiting to see if the treatment was working.
In April 2024, surgery was performed to remove the tumor. During the procedure, the doctors performed a reconstruction using a vascularized autograft from the patient’s own fibula. The surgery was followed by six cycles of postoperative chemotherapy.
In July 2024, Marcelina completed her treatment. After months of hospitals, chemotherapy, and anxiety, there was hope that we would finally be able to return to normal life.
But we heard that the cancer had returned
Unfortunately, in 2025, the disease returned. A biopsy of the soft tissue in the left forearm confirmed the recurrence.
With all my heart, I wanted to shield my child from this news. Marcelina had already been through so much, and yet she had to face another battle. She proved to be very brave. She underwent several more rounds of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, followed by surgery to remove the tumor.
We live between home and the hospital
The illness has changed our family's life. Marcelina spends an average of two weeks in the hospital and one week at home. When she's in the hospital, her dad stays with her, and I stay at home with her younger siblings.
Our daily lives have been divided between the hospital ward, home, school, work, and the constant struggle to keep everything under control. Trips to the hospital take over our entire lives. We have to make up for the time we miss at work. Marcelina’s siblings are suffering from the separation, though we try to make sure the illness doesn’t rob them of their childhood. The worst part is that we simply can’t be together.
Please support me
We still have further treatment, check-ups, rehabilitation, and the struggle to regain our strength ahead of us. This means more trips and expenses, organizing care, and a life dictated by the illness. That is why we are asking for your help. Every donation will be a huge help to us.
We wanted to believe that the worst was behind us. Unfortunately, the illness has returned. The second diagnosis knocked the wind out of our sails. We need your help.
