In early March, I noticed that my son Lukas was getting more and more bruises on his body. I was very worried about this, so we went to see a doctor, who tried to reassure me, saying that it was completely normal and I shouldn’t worry. A neurologist confirmed what the first doctor had said.
I thought at the time that maybe it really wasn't anything serious, and we went back to our normal routine. However, a while later, Lukas started complaining of an earache. I couldn't ignore it.
Alarming results
We ended up in the pediatric ward in Kędzierzyn-Koźle, where our son underwent a series of tests, the results of which turned out to be alarming. He had a severe platelet deficiency.
We had to stay in the hospital for another two weeks because he was suffering from multiple infections at the same time: the coronavirus, rotavirus, norovirus, and RSV.
The moment of diagnosis
On March 20, our son was admitted to Przylądek Nadziei in Wrocław, where further tests were conducted as part of the diagnostic process. It was there that we first heard Lukas’s diagnosis: aplastic anemia.
At that moment, my husband and I were overcome with shock and disbelief, followed immediately by a paralyzing fear for our son’s future. It was hard to gather our thoughts, and every new piece of information brought uncertainty and a sense of helplessness in the face of a disease we knew so little about.
Numerous diagnoses
We have been at the clinic almost continuously for several months now. In early July, our son is scheduled to be transferred to a high-monitoring unit, where he will undergo immunotherapy.
Since birth, Lukas has been on many antibiotics because he frequently suffered from infections. In addition, he has a group of congenital defects, including a receded lower jaw, a cleft palate, and speech aplasia.
We need your support
On his better days, my son loves to play with LEGO bricks and toy cars. It brings him a lot of joy and helps take his mind off his worries for a while, though he constantly mentions how much he misses his normal daily life and his family.
I’m currently staying at the clinic with my son. Because of his many health issues, I haven’t left his side since he was born. I can’t work right now—my son’s health is the most important thing. Lukas’s dad is doing his best; he works every day and visits us whenever he can.
I can’t stop thinking about what tomorrow will bring. Anxiety has become a constant part of our daily lives. The costs of treatment are high, which is why we’re asking for your support. Every bit of help and every kind word brings us closer to victory in this difficult battle.
