In mid-February, Lenka and I went for another check-up. I wanted so much for it to be a routine visit, one of those where you come home feeling relieved. Before every check-up, I hold my breath, waiting to see what the CT scan will show. This time, unfortunately, The result left no doubt. The tumor had returned. Once again, fear and racing thoughts about what would happen next returned.Hospital
Lenka has been back in the hospital since March 3. Another round of chemotherapy has begun. This time, the treatment will be longer and much stronger. I look at her every day and see how weak she is. After all these tests and procedures, she snuggles up close, seeking closeness and comfort.![]()
Bone marrow aspiration
The doctors also performed a bone marrow puncture. This test is supposed to show whether Lenka's bone marrow is clean. Now we are waiting for the results. For me, every hour of this wait is difficult. In moments like these, a mother's heart trembles for everything.Heart and kidney tests
Lenka still has cardiological and nephrological tests ahead of her. The chemotherapy she is currently undergoing puts a lot of strain on her heart and kidneys. Every time I hear about more tests, all I can think about is whether her little body will have the strength to get through it all.Our Lenka
Lenka is still very small. We are very afraid, but we still hold on to the hope that, even though we have another difficult stage ahead of us, this path will ultimately lead us to health.Parents

From the very beginning, the body cried out for attention.
Lena was placed in foster care as a newborn. From the first weeks of her life, her body signaled that something was wrong. Abdominal pain, cramps, tension, anxiety, and constant discomfort persisted despite changes in milk, medication, massages, and subsequent consultations.
She developed normally and learned about the world just like other children her age. Only her tummy wouldn't leave her alone, constantly reminding her that something was beyond simple explanation.
When she was six months old, her body was clearly struggling to digest food. The decision to perform a follow-up abdominal ultrasound was finally supposed to provide an answer. No one expected it to be the beginning of a nightmare that would change everything.
The diagnosis came quickly.
Extended diagnostics led to suspicion of a tumor in the retroperitoneal space. Lena was urgently referred to the hospital to verify what no one wanted to say out loud.
The diagnosis was confirmed at the Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Ward in Krakow Prokocim. Retroperitoneal neuroblastoma, a malignant tumor of the peripheral nerves and autonomic nervous system, affecting the pelvic nerves. The weight of these words was devastating and left no room for illusions.
Treatment that puts you to the test
On June 11, 2025, Lena underwent a laparotomy. This was followed by further stages of treatment, numerous CT scans, and anesthetics. During the first of these, she went into shock, revealing an allergy to the anesthetic used. From then on, each subsequent procedure brought with it additional anxiety.
Lena underwent six cycles of chemotherapy, which she endured with remarkable childlike strength. Due to a sharp decline in her vital signs, she required a blood transfusion. After completing chemotherapy and follow-up tests, surgery was planned to remove the remaining tumor, but the doctors decided to postpone it. Lena remains under close observation at this time.
Another hospital stay and follow-up tests are scheduled for February, which will determine the next steps in treatment.
Home far away, hospital close by
From May to September, Lena practically never left the hospital. Her foster family is constantly by her side, accompanying her during treatment and trying to create a semblance of security in a place that has little to do with safety. Their biological children stayed at home, over a hundred kilometers away.
The daily life of this family is a constant balancing act between caring for Lena and longing, logistics, and feelings of being torn apart. Frequent commutes are an additional burden. Lena has a central line, which requires regular flushing at a hospital more than 100 kilometers away from her home.
Please help
This family gave Lena everything they had. Security, love, and support during her illness. She is their child by choice, though not by biology.Having children of their own, they decided to open their hearts and home to another. Lena found herself in the safest place she could have found.
