Routine blood count

Blood tests performed during pregnancy were a natural part of health care. Regular blood counts, standard recommendations, vigilance that accompanies most expectant mothers. All attention was focused on the baby and its proper development.

The results showed deviations, which were initially interpreted as typical for pregnancy. Supplementation, observation, and further monitoring were recommended. At this stage, there were no indications of cancer, and Kamila was not diagnosed hematologically during her pregnancy.

After childbirth

It was only after the C-section and the birth of her child that doctors recommended Kamila seek urgent hematological consultation. Disturbing blood test results required further diagnosis. The hematologist decided to perform a bone marrow biopsy. It was then, after giving birth, that she received the diagnosis that changed her life.

Diagnosis

Acute myeloid leukemia, promyelocytic type, was diagnosed. The diagnosis came suddenly, leaving no time to come to terms with the fear and no space to slowly accept the facts. It required immediate decisions and a quick start to treatment. This is a disease that allows for no delay. Every day counts, and treatment must begin almost immediately, regardless of where the patient is in her life.

Treatment

Kamila has been qualified for treatment according to the PETHEMA LPA 2017 protocol in the high-risk group. The therapy is intensive and long-term, placing a huge strain on the body and mind.

She is currently undergoing treatment. Her time is divided into stages of therapy, hospitalizations, checkups, and short returns home, after which it is time to start the next cycle. Each cycle closes and opens at the same time, not allowing her to forget about her illness even for a moment.

The time between

Kamila is currently at home, trying to regain at least a little bit of balance. It is a space that provides a semblance of security, even if it is fragile and impermanent. However, the disease does not disappear from her thoughts. Questions about the future keep coming back. Motherhood, which was supposed to be a time of peace and building a new everyday life, has become a parallel path to cancer treatment. The emotions are difficult to describe. They are a mixture of fear, determination, and a deep need to survive for herself and her child.

Why support is needed

The fundraiser aims to provide assistance at a time when illness takes away not only physical strength, but also a sense of stability and security. It is also an expression of presence and solidarity with a young woman who, shortly after becoming a mother, was forced to fight for her own life. Thank you for every gesture of kindness shown to Kamila.
