The beginning of the battle

In May, my son Dawid started feeling unwell. He became very drowsy and vomited once, and neither he nor I could figure out why.

Dawid was referred for tests. The results came back and raised our first concerns: a very high CRP level and low iron levels. Shortly afterward, the CRP level was even higher. I felt that something was wrong. My fear grew with each passing day.

In addition, the previous evening, Dawid felt a change under his ribs that hadn't been there before.

Unanswered Questions

We ended up at the hospital in Zdroje. That’s where a series of specialized tests began. Each subsequent test raised more and more questions. An enlarged spleen. Abnormal lymph nodes in the upper abdomen and around the aorta. That was when I first heard the word no mother ever wants to hear: cancer.

I remember that moment very clearly. A fear I had never felt before came over me. My head was swirling with questions to which no one yet knew the answers.

After further tests, we received a diagnosis that changed our lives: Hodgkin’s lymphoma. That same day, Dawid began his first round of chemotherapy.

Treatment

These days, our lives look completely different. Instead of vacation plans, we have hospital visits, tests, and the fight for his health. Dawid is scheduled to undergo six rounds of chemotherapy.

On July 6, my son and I returned to the hematology-oncology ward. He had already undergone the Vascoport implantation procedure. He will begin his second treatment regimen on July 9. After that, he will undergo a PET scan, which will answer the most important question: Is the treatment working? The results of that scan will determine what his further treatment will look like.

Further difficulties arose along the way. Dawid developed pneumonia caused by an unidentified microorganism.

Mother and son

I’m with my son all the time. I’ve been on sick leave since the beginning of his illness because Dawid needs me the most right now. I’m raising him on my own. Fortunately, his grandparents—my parents—live with us, and they give us tremendous support every day. They’re doing everything they can to help us get through this difficult time. I’m incredibly grateful to them for that.

Dreams and Passions

The illness has taken away many things that were important to Dawid. He can’t go to school right now, but I’m trying to arrange for him to receive one-on-one instruction. Learning has always been his great passion. Dawid is extremely talented; his most recent high school GPA was over 5.

He loves programming, video games, and anything that requires logical thinking. He’s a unique, ambitious, and passionate young man. I’m incredibly proud of him. He also has a wonderful dream: he’d like to visit Athens, the capital of Greece, someday.

Help

We have a long road ahead of us. The costs of travel for medical treatment, rehabilitation, psychological support, and other expenses related to the illness are very high. Any help will allow us to focus on what matters most: the fight for Dawid’s health.
