Diagnosis

In November 2013, Wiesława consulted her doctors because of headaches following an injury. Tests intended to explain one ailment revealed something much more serious. Cancerous lesions in her head, hip, left limb, and spine. The diagnosis was clear: IgG lambda multiple myeloma.

The disease, which was discovered by chance, immediately took control of Wiesława's life. Since then, more than twelve years of uninterrupted struggle have passed, with no long breaks or any sense that it was coming to an end.

Years of treatment and subsequent lines of therapy

From the moment of diagnosis, a long and exhausting treatment journey began. VCD and CTD regimens, autologous stem cell transplantation in 2015, maintenance treatment with thalidomide, followed by lenalidomide monotherapy, then DVD, and participation in the DREAM14 clinical trial. The therapy had to be discontinued due to severe side effects, including keratopathy of the eyes, and the disease began to progress again.

The next stage was treatment according to the PVD regimen, and from July 2024, participation in the EloPd drug program. Unfortunately, this line of therapy also ended with disease progression. In October , a decision was made to start treatment with teklistamab, which continues to this day. The drug is administered once a week at the day care unit of the Hematology Clinic in Bydgoszcz.

The disease took away his ability to function.

Years of treatment and the disease itself have left serious consequences. Wiesława struggles with kidney failure, sensory polyneuropathy of the lower limbs, flaccid-spastic tetraparesis, hypertension, keratopathy of the eyes, and bronchial asthma.

The most difficult tasks are everyday activities. Getting dressed, washing, taking care of hygiene and appearance, and often even getting out of bed after chemotherapy. This is everyday life, where every little task requires effort and help from another person.

Everyday life based on care and closeness

Wiesława lives in a house where her daughters take care of her. One of them regularly drives her to the Hematology Clinic in Bydgoszcz. It is about eighty kilometers one way, four times a month. In addition to transportation, her daughters help with cooking, cleaning, shopping, hygiene, and mobility.

Wiesława has been a widow for fifteen years and lives solely on a low pension, which is not enough to cover the costs of treatment, travel, and daily functioning while ill. This is care that has no working hours or days off. It is a presence without which Wiesława would not be able to function.

Why support is needed

The treatment continues, but the disease persists and generates daily costs that are becoming increasingly burdensome with each passing month.

This fundraiser provides real help in maintaining treatment and daily functioning. It supports a woman who has been fighting for years, even though the disease is systematically taking away her independence.

"I no longer fight for grand plans. I fight so that every day can be lived without pain and humiliation."
