Each diagnosis was the start of the next one
The illness crept into Yulia’s life gradually, year after year, leaving its mark. Every moment that was supposed to mark the end of her struggle turned out, in time, to be merely the next stage of it.
She received her first diagnosis in 2016. The cancer detected in her right breast was surgically removed while she was still in Ukraine. The treatment she began was intended to restore her peace of mind, a sense of stability, and the belief that the hardest part was behind her. However, this respite did not last long. A year later, the disease returned, this time in her left breast. In the following years, further diagnoses were made. In 2019, it was necessary to remove her right ovary. Shortly thereafter, doctors detected a cancerous lesion in her lung.
The disease didn't stay in one place
Another tumor was diagnosed in her brain. In 2024, doctors diagnosed a glioma in the right temporal lobe. This is one of the most challenging diagnoses in oncology. Yuliia underwent a Gamma Knife stereotactic procedure, which was intended to halt the tumor’s growth.
Treatment is ongoing. In Poland, he is undergoing chemotherapy with Temodal, which is intended to slow the progression of the disease. This is palliative therapy, requiring repeated treatment cycles. Currently, doctors are also monitoring new changes appearing on the other side of the brain.
The body is worn out from years of struggle
Over the years, Yuliia has undergone numerous surgeries, radiation therapy, and many rounds of chemotherapy. Her body is growing increasingly weak. She also suffers from other conditions, including asthma, an aneurysm and cardiac ischemia, gastritis and duodenitis, and cerebral edema. The most difficult aspect, however, is the daily symptoms of the disease: sudden, severe headaches, loss of consciousness, and problems with motor coordination. There are days when emergency medical intervention is necessary.
The scale of what this young woman has to face is hard to imagine. The disease has robbed her not only of her health but also of her independence. Today, even simple daily activities at home require the presence of another person.
The greatest source of support today is the presence of another person
Yuliia lives in Poland with her husband, who cares for her every day. He accompanies her to doctor’s appointments, helps her with daily tasks, and is there for her when her illness suddenly flares up.Just a few years ago, she herself worked in the medical field and was involved in volunteer work. Helping others came naturally to her. Today, the roles have reversed. She is now the one who needs the help and presence of others.
Treatment must continue
The biggest challenge remains the cost of treatment. Yuliia is undergoing chemotherapy with Temodal at a dose of 200 mg. The drug is currently not available in hospitals in Poland, so it must be imported from Ukraine. The monthly cost of treatment is approximately 4,000 zlotys.
The funds raised will help cover the costs of medical treatment, non-reimbursable medications, and rehabilitation, which allows her to maintain at least some degree of independence.
In a situation like this, every gesture of support takes on special significance.
