Sitting next to Tymek in the hospital room, watching as the pump pumps more and more liters of chemotherapy and other medications into his veins, my mind is swirling with thoughts I can’t seem to shake. Thoughts no parent should ever have to face.
Just a short while ago, an ordinary childhood
Six months ago, Tymek started school. He met new classmates and learned to read and write. He would come home with a backpack full of notebooks and dreams. Every day, he discovered the world he loves so much. He’s fascinated by dinosaurs and the mysteries of nature. Cycling and fishing are his greatest passions.
Alarming research
In mid-January, we became concerned because Tymek had turned very pale. We had some routine blood tests done. After receiving very poor results, we went to the emergency room. The doctors asked us about any symptoms Tymek had been reporting recently. The mild stomach pain he experienced in the morning before going to school wasn’t what we thought it was.
The ultrasound revealed a 13 × 7 cm tumor in the small intestine and severe inflammation. We were taken by ambulance to receive a blood transfusion. However, we were not told that we were about to enter the oncology ward.
After numerous tests, a diagnosis was made
After numerous tests, including a tumor biopsy and a bone marrow biopsy, Tymek was diagnosed with one of the rarest and most aggressive forms of cancer. A cancer capable of doubling in size within a single day. That’s when the fight for Tymek’s life began.
Chemotherapy, which causes a host of side effects, was started immediately. After the first round of chemo, we had to deal with inflammation caused by the tumor breaking down too quickly. The two weeks spent in isolation and on antibiotics were very difficult. The next cycle led to esophageal burns, the need for parenteral nutrition, and a bacterial infection treated with three last-resort antibiotics.
Tymek fights every day
Despite all this, Tymek is incredibly brave. Every day he fights on and smiles at the thought that he might be able to leave the hospital from time to time. At home, his older sister is waiting for him, asking every day, “When is Tymuś coming back?”
We have a long way to go
We face costly rehabilitation, specialist consultations, and a daily struggle to keep going. We want to see Tymek fishing, riding his bike, and making carefree plans for the future again. That is why we are asking for your support, for which we thank you from the bottom of our hearts in advance
