Onset of illness
In February, my son Szymon began experiencing his first concerning oral health issues. First, he had canker sores, then his gums started bleeding. It seemed like a problem that could be managed with treatment. Unfortunately, there was only a slight improvement.
During our second visit to the pediatrician, we were given a referral for a complete blood count. The results were very concerning; the white blood cell count was alarmingly high.
Treatment and Side Effects
Szymon was admitted to the Upper Silesian Children’s Health Center in Katowice. More tests, more hours of waiting, and growing fear. Finally, we received the diagnosis no parent ever wants to hear: acute mixed-lineage leukemia. From that moment on, we devoted everything to fighting for his health.
Today, Szymon is at Przylądek Nadziei in Wrocław, where he is undergoing treatment. His illness and treatment have brought with them further dramatic challenges. He has experienced numerous complications: thrombosis, sepsis, and a central line infection. Since the start of his treatment, he has been taken to the operating room four times.
He still has more stages of treatment ahead of him. The doctors are planning immunotherapy, followed by a bone marrow transplant. His condition is further complicated by thrombocytopenia and the presence of the BCR::ABL1 genetic mutation.
My Son's Strength
Despite everything he’s been through, Szymon didn’t give up. While undergoing treatment, he passed his eighth-grade exam, which he took at home under the supervision of an external committee. He showed tremendous determination and strength.
Just a few months ago, it was hard to keep him at home. He loves sports, and volleyball has always been his greatest passion. Today, instead of practices, there are hospital rooms, consultations, and more tests. He dreams of returning to the court and living like his peers.
At home, his younger brother Bartosz, who is 12 years old and has Cohen syndrome, is waiting for him. They miss each other very much. During these extremely difficult months, the boys’ grandparents have been a tremendous source of support for us, allowing us to focus on Szymon’s health.
High costs
The costs associated with his treatment are high, so we’re asking for your support. We believe that, thanks to people with big hearts, Szymon will regain his smile and his health and return to what he loves most.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support.
