The few days that changed everything
On March 14, Szymon had high blood pressure and looked pale. Two days later, he had a nosebleed. On March 17, his mother took him to their family doctor, who referred the boy for observation at the pediatric ward in Wałcz. After initial tests, Szymon was admitted to the hospital in Szczecin, to the St. Nicholas Ward on Unii Lubelskiej Street. There, on March 19, he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
The fight that began immediately
That same day, Szymon began chemotherapy. The treatment proved to be exceptionally difficult from the very beginning. After the first and second cycles, he experienced serious complications: stomatitis, toxic gastritis, enteritis, and colitis, rectal bleeding, paralytic ileus, and pneumonia. After eleven grueling weeks in the hospital, Szymon was finally able to return home for three days—a brief but oh-so-important moment of respite.
The whole family on Szymon's side
The illness has taken a toll on the entire family. Mom is with her son at the hospital all the time, so Dad is currently the sole breadwinner. Stress, being separated from their daughter, and caring for their seriously ill son—including difficult days spent in the intensive care unit—have become part of their daily lives. Despite everything, the parents are doing everything they can to make Szymon feel safe and loved.
Hobbies he wants to take up again
Szymon is a boy full of energy who loves fishing and motocross. These passions are his promise of a normal life—a world he wants with all his might to return to as soon as his treatment allows.
