As the world was waking up, he was fading....
In mid-May, while the world was gaining energy, Richard was losing it day by day. There was yellowing of the skin, a dramatic loss of thirty pounds, epigastric pain and weakness so profound that simply getting out of bed became an insurmountable effort. Tests showed dilatation of the bile ducts and bile duct, and the diagnosis confirmed one of the most serious diagnoses - malignant neoplasm of the extrahepatic bile ducts.
A disease that devastates
Biliary tract cancer is one of the cancers that are very difficult to treat and extremely taxing on the body. It is accompanied by severe abdominal pain, progressive cachexia, digestive problems, jaundice and loss of strength.
In Richard's case, the disease has already destroyed much. It has taken away his appetite, weakened his daily dexterity making each day harder and harder to survive.
First treatment and surgery plan
On June 23, a stent was placed in the hospital to drain bile and at least partially alleviate the accompanying symptoms of the disease. Today, Richard is awaiting a life-critical operation. On October 21, he qualified for a laparoscopic total pancreatectomy, or removal of the entire pancreas. It's a major procedure with huge risks, but one that offers a chance to prolong his life.
Everyday life under the weight of illness
Seemingly simple activities such as getting out of bed, getting dressed and eating a meal have become an effort beyond measure for the man. Fatigue and lack of appetite make every day resemble a battle with one's body. Comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, thyroid problems and spinal degeneration further compound the suffering.
A lonely fight
Richard is an only child. He can't count on the support of his son, with whom he hasn't had contact for a long time. He struggles with his illness alone, hoping that outside help will get him through the coming months and take up the fight for life.
