The illness came on suddenly
It all started with an enlarged thyroid gland. At first, there was no indication that cancer was behind the symptoms. After further tests, Robert received his diagnosis: papillary thyroid carcinoma. The disease had also spread to his kidneys. That was the moment that completely changed his life.
Treatment and the daily struggle
Robert is currently undergoing radiation therapy at the regional hospital in Zgierz. Every day involves treatment, hospital visits, and immense stress about the disease’s progression. His body is also severely burdened by other health issues. Robert has had a heart attack and is struggling with diabetes, high blood pressure, and an enlarged prostate. As a result of a previous accident, he lost sight in his right eye, and his hands have been permanently disfigured. Despite all these difficulties, he tries to cope on his own every day.
Loneliness in Illness
The hardest part for Robert is that he’s practically on his own with all of this. He is currently at home and handles all his daily responsibilities on his own, despite his deteriorating health and physical weakness. He lost his job. He has applied for disability benefits, but is currently living solely on unemployment benefits from the employment office, amounting to about 1,200 PLN per month. This amount is not enough to comfortably cover his basic needs, bills, and medical expenses.
The illness robbed him of his sense of security
Until recently, Robert led an active life and pursued his passions. Today, his biggest challenges are simply getting by and struggling to maintain financial stability. Every prescription, every trip to the hospital, and every day’s expenses are a huge burden. Despite everything, Robert refuses to give up and is fighting to regain his health and maintain his independence.
