The long road to diagnosis
The first worrying signs appeared when Peter was just twelve years old. CBC showed a reduced platelet count, and subsequent tests confirmed the gradual deterioration. In June 2024, he was brought to Cape Hope, where specialized hematology diagnostics were initiated.
A mutation in the TERC gene was detected, which may be associated with the dyskeratosis genotype, affecting the function of the hematopoietic system. The diagnosis continues to be deepened, and Peter is undergoing further genetic testing to unveil the full picture of the disease.
What is thrombocytopenia
Thrombocytopenia is a condition characterized by an insufficient number of platelets, which are responsible for normal clotting.
Their deficiency means that even a minor injury can lead to bleeding that is difficult to stop, and a simple cut requires great care and time to stop the bleeding.
Comorbidities make treatment more difficult
In addition to thrombocytopenia, Peter struggles with asthma, allergies and other health problems that require constant care from specialists. He undergoes a bone marrow trepanobiopsy once a year, which is necessary to monitor the condition of his hematopoietic system. There have also been worrisome signs of liver function in the diagnosis , which require further testing and close monitoring.
Everyday life on the brink of caution
The most difficult aspect of the disease is its unpredictability. Any scratch, bump or small cut on the skin can lead to bleeding that cannot be easily stopped. It's a daily fear for one's body that is quite a burden for a teenager.
Peter lives alternately at home and in the hospital, as he requires constant specialized care. The disease imposes caution in every activity and makes even a seemingly ordinary day require an attentiveness far greater than a growing child should carry.
A boy with a passion
Peter is a young man full of interests and energy. He loves math, programming and playing the drums. He goes to the gym, is learning English, and creating Lego constructions is a source of focus and joy for him.
The disease did not take away his passions, but limited his ability to pursue them. The caution that every day requires, the care of the skin and the need to control the risk of injury mean that many activities must be postponed or performed with great caution.
