Chronic hoarseness
Last October, I started to notice that my voice was hoarse. The weather had turned autumnal, so I figured it wasn’t anything serious. However, the hoarseness persisted for a long time and wouldn’t go away. This worried me a lot, so I decided to make an appointment with a doctor shortly thereafter.
During the visit, the doctor examined me thoroughly and was also very concerned. I was given referrals for further tests.
Biopsy, diagnosis, and various procedures
I had a biopsy back in November. I remember that moment as if it were yesterday. All sorts of scenarios started running through my head, and the uncertainty of waiting for the results was one of the hardest experiences I’ve ever had to face.
The results came back shortly afterward and indicated a malignant tumor of the larynx. My whole world came to a standstill at that moment, and I refused to accept that the diagnosis applied to me.
Since my diagnosis, I have undergone a tracheotomy, had a PEG tube inserted, and had a laryngectomy. Unfortunately, one of the side effects of the treatment is that I can no longer speak.
A difficult reality
In April of this year, I began radiation therapy. I knew this was the next stage of my treatment, but I wasn’t prepared for the side effects that soon set in. With each passing day, I felt my strength draining away. Simple, everyday activities began to require enormous effort, and weakness became a constant part of my life. On top of that, I’m struggling with insomnia.
Before I got sick, I was very physically active. I also went fishing often. Back then, I felt a pleasant sense of calm; I would gaze at the landscape and listen to the sounds of nature. Today, my hobbies are more low-key. On good days, I read books or do crossword puzzles.
I need some help
Due to my health, I am unable to work. I also don't have any support from my loved ones with my daily activities. I try to find the strength within myself, but everyday life can be very difficult.
The costs associated with my treatment are very high. I am unable to cover them on my own, which is why I am asking for your support on this difficult journey. Every bit of help and every kind thought brings me closer to what matters most: my health.
