Subtle, gradually worsening fatigue and insomnia
At first, Marek attributed all his symptoms to fatigue. Long hours at work, constant rushing, and little sleep. However, despite the passage of time, his chronic fatigue did not subside. In fact, the opposite was true. It began to accompany him every day and at all hours. Finally, he decided to get some basic blood tests done. He didn’t expect anything serious—until the doctor called with an urgent message: please come to the hospital immediately.
Diagnosis, treatment, isolation
He received the diagnosis quickly: acute myeloid leukemia with myelodysplastic changes. For Mark, those words made time stand still. Just moments earlier, he had been thinking about ordinary things: plans for the coming months, work, and daily responsibilities. Only one word came to mind: treatment. After the first round of chemotherapy, there were so many complications that it was decided to isolate Mark. Following treatment, he went into remission with a significant reduction in measurable residual disease.
Another chance at life
In February, the moment Marek had been eagerly awaiting finally arrived. He felt both hope and anxiety. The doctors performed an allogeneic stem cell transplant using cells from a compatible, unrelated donor.
Long-term isolation
The illness took much more from Mark than just his health. Overnight, he had to give up his job—a place that had been part of his daily life for many years. But the hardest part turned out to be something else.
Due to his treatment and strict medical recommendations, Marek has been in strict isolation at the hospital for several months now. The conversations and get-togethers with his loved ones that once filled his life have been replaced by silence. He misses playing with his grandchildren and watching them grow up. He also misses working on his beloved garden plot.
Hope for Mark
The treatment process is long and expensive, but Marek isn’t giving up. The funds raised through the fundraiser will go toward rehabilitation, medication, treatment-related costs, and psychological care.
