Every morning began the same way for Marcin: the sound of the alarm clock, the aromatic scent of coffee in the kitchen, and a moment of silence before the world sprang into action. There was something soothing about this routine, something that created a sense of order in his life. Work was a constant point of reference. It gave him a sense of purpose and stability, allowing him to build a daily routine based on predictability.
Onset of illness
The appearance of small lumps on her neck caused concern. It was a warning sign that could not be ignored. Further testing was conducted quickly. The results all pointed to one diagnosis: stage G2 squamous cell carcinoma with metastases.
It’s a diagnosis that instantly changes the way you think about the future. From that moment on, every decision is focused solely on treatment. Radiation therapy was initiated.
Less and less strength
The pounds melted away from his body, one by one. Losing 16 pounds isn’t just a number—it’s real weakness and a decline in physical performance. On top of that, there are other health issues that further hinder his ability to function. The diagnosis coincided with another difficult event: the serious consequences of a fall from a height. The surgery on his leg and spine, followed by long weeks of rehabilitation, had already left him tired and weakened. Every bit of progress, no matter how small, came at the cost of immense effort.
Support is needed
Marcin is currently unemployed, which is why his sense of stability has been severely shaken. The large lump on his neck is palpable and constantly reminds him of its presence. It makes it difficult for him to swallow, and the accompanying pain can radiate all the way to his ears. These symptoms ensure that he never forgets about his illness, even for a moment.
Despite everything, Marcin seeks out small pleasures to feel normal, if only for a moment. A good movie can take his mind off his heavy thoughts, and music fills the silence. A short bike ride offers a taste of his former everyday life. These small moments don’t change reality, but they allow him to put thoughts of his illness aside for a moment. Treatment continues and requires time, strength, and resources that are beyond Marcin’s means.
There are moments when you lose control of what’s happening, but there’s still something you can bear together. The burden of treatment and the time that still holds value.
