Just a few months ago, Maja returned from winter camp like any other child—full of memories, energy, and plans. No one suspected that her sudden squint would turn out to be a sign of a very serious illness. It all happened in the blink of an eye. Hospitalization, more tests, and a diagnosis that completely changed the lives of the entire family. Today, Maja fights every day for her health and the peaceful childhood that the disease tried to take away from her.
One symptom that changed everything
On March 5, 2025, Maja was suddenly admitted to the hospital. At first, it seemed that the squint that had appeared after she returned from winter camp might be a temporary issue. Unfortunately, further testing revealed some devastating news.
Doctors diagnosed Maja with a pilomyxoid astrocytoma and a meningeal lesion in the thoracic spine. It came as a huge shock to her parents. Just moments before, their daughter had been enjoying everyday life, pursuing her passions, and planning her next childhood adventures. Suddenly, their world was filled with hospital rooms, consultations, and fear for Maja’s future.
Surgery and difficult treatment
On March 11, Maja underwent a very serious procedure. She had an endoscopic tumor biopsy and a septostomy, and a ventriculoperitoneal shunt with an integrated anti-siphoning system and a Rickham reservoir was implanted. Chemotherapy also began. It was an extremely difficult time for both Maja and her loved ones. The girl’s body was very weak, but Maja bravely endured the subsequent stages of treatment.
However, there is some good news today. The tumor has shrunk, and the lesion in her spine remains stable. Unfortunately, the tumor cannot be surgically removed. It is located in an area responsible for vital functions. Removing it could cause her to lose her sight or leave her unable to walk. That is why the most important thing now is to monitor and observe the disease closely.
A Childhood Under Doctors' Supervision
Maja is under the care of as many as seven specialists. Twice a year, she must undergo an MRI to monitor both the tumor and the changes in her spine. She also needs regular physical therapy to regain her strength after treatment. The illness has also affected her mental health. Maja is currently receiving therapy, participating in support groups, and working with a psychotherapist. This is incredibly important because a child who should be thinking about school, play, and dreams has had to grow up very quickly into a reality full of fear and uncertainty.
Mia's mom quit her job so she could be with her daughter every day. Currently, only her dad is working, and the costs associated with her treatment and daily living are constantly rising.
She dreams of a normal everyday life
Maja loves horses, drawing, and building with blocks. These hobbies help her forget about her illness and the reality of the hospital, at least for a little while. Her parents are doing everything they can to ensure that, despite her difficult experiences, she can still just be a child.
The funds raised will be used for rehabilitation, psychological care, dermatological cosmetics, and transportation related to treatment and follow-up appointments. Please support Maja. Every donation helps her continue her rehabilitation, regain her strength after chemotherapy, and fight for a more peaceful childhood free from constant fear of the future.
