Many unanswered questions
Early December brought Maja her first pains, which appeared in various parts of her body. At first glance, they didn’t seem out of the ordinary, but with each passing week they became increasingly concerning. Doctors tried to find the cause of her symptoms. One diagnosis after another was made: strep throat, ear infection, the flu, suspected mononucleosis, post-infectious pneumonia, or an enlarged spleen. Each diagnosis brought a momentary hope that it was the one that explained everything.
But the questions didn’t go away. The uncertainty grew day by day.
In January, the answer came—one no parent is ever prepared to hear: acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
The Fight for a Child's Health
On the twelfth day of treatment, Maja was diagnosed with chickenpox . While the disease usually runs its course without complications in most children, in her case it posed a serious threat. Agranulocytosis, the failure of wounds to heal, and the risk of secondary infections meant that every day required the doctors to remain extremely vigilant. Maja was also diagnosed with hypoglycemia.
Chemotherapy had to be put on hold for a few days. Every such interruption caused her parents great anxiety. And just when things started to improve, her blood sugar suddenly dropped to 30. Maja didn’t respond to stimuli; she was limp, didn’t move, and didn’t speak. The world came to a standstill once again. For her parents, each of these moments was a reminder of just how fragile life can be.
Longing for a normal life
The illness changed Maja’s daily life and that of her loved ones almost overnight. Because of her isolation, she can no longer spend time with her friends or go about her daily life the way she did just a short time ago. She also misses her siblings very much—her sister Oliwia and her brother Marcel. Before her illness, Maja was very active. She loved riding her bike or scooter, and swimming brought her great joy as well. She loves animals, and owning an axolotl is her dream.
Daily challenges
Every test and every medical procedure fills Maja with fear. She has no appetite, often feels nauseous, and the mood swings caused by her treatment and illness have become part of her daily life. The hardest part, however, are the questions Maja asks her parents.
“Why did I get sick?” These are words no parent is prepared to hear from their own child.
