Update
Serious infectious complications
In recent weeks, Maja's health required special attention and intensive medical care. First, pneumonia developed, followed by sepsis, which was accompanied by high fever and generalized, violent inflammation of the entire body.![]()
Extended diagnostics and treatment
Doctors conducted extensive diagnostics to determine the source of the infection. Numerous tests were performed, including bronchoscopy, to precisely determine the cause of sepsis. During this time, multiple blood and platelet transfusions were also necessary to stabilize vital signs.Waiting for the next stage of therapy
Currently underway the waiting period for improved test results, necessary for the safe commencement of the final cycle of chemotherapy. January 7, 2026

Seemingly nothing of concern
The onset of the illness was not indicative of the dramatic diagnosis that was to come just a few weeks later. First there was weakness, reminiscent of the common cold, followed by swelling of the cheek and gums, which began to invade the teeth. The doctor diagnosed sinusitis and stomatitis and instituted antibiotic therapy, which was expected to bring rapid improvement.
The temporary relief of symptoms subsided after a week, and enlarged lymph nodes joined the earlier complaints. Maja was then taken to the ED, where a blood test performed immediately raised the suspicion of leukemia. On the night of September 16-17, she was transported by ambulance to the Hemato-Oncology Department in Szczecin, where the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia was confirmed a day later.
The hardships of treatment
Treatment began immediately after admission to the hospital. Maja underwent Broviac central catheter implantation and a series of lumbar punctures with the administration of cytostatic drugs. Behind her were two cycles of chemotherapy, the first of which was extremely taxing.
It was accompanied by severe vomiting and nausea, headaches associated with intracranial hypotension, severe weight loss, the need to introduce parenteral nutrition, and a massive skin lesion, leaving marked discoloration on the skin.
The second cycle proved better tolerated, but two more cycles remain in the treatment plan. It's a long and demanding road, taking a toll on both the body and emotions of the young patient.
Daily life in sickness
Due to unstable blood results and the frequent need for blood and platelet transfusions, Maja spends most of her time in the hospital. She is accompanied by her mother, who remains by her side almost constantly, as her dad is unable to provide direct care after suffering a stroke.
The disease has brought her life to a halt so far. She can't go to school, meet with friends or practice soccer, which was not only a passion for her, but also an important part of her daily life.
The exclusion from life, the sudden change in perspective and the uncertainty of treatment have had a huge impact on Mai's emotional state. She faces intense anxiety about the future and a sense of loss of her previous world, so she benefits from the support of a psychologist.
Despite the difficult emotions accompanying her, Maja is not alone. Her older siblings are very supportive, accompanying her and helping her through the most difficult moment of her youthful life.
Why support is needed
Help will allow Mai to survive the intensive treatment, and give her family at least a little stability at a time when every day requires tremendous strength.
