Paralyzing fear
In 2019, Magda heard the diagnosis: oral cancer - a malignant form of the disease that takes away not only her health, but also her voice, her ability to eat solid foods and her smile - the honest, unforced one without any sense of shame. The diagnosis came unexpectedly, leaving little room for hope. Magda began treatment immediately, fully aware of its consequences.
She underwent chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and then extensive surgery: removal of the mandibular shaft and creation of an oro-cutaneous fistula in the submandibular region. In 2022, doctors performed reconstruction - the first step on a long road back to normalcy.
It was not the end, but the beginning. The fight for health became a fight for elementary needs: the ability to eat, to speak, to smile. For the restoration of dignity.
Reconstruction is the only way
Magda continues to fight. She now faces the next stage - a series of difficult, necessary treatments, the cost of which is not covered by the reimbursement system:
- Soft tissue reconstruction - to restore function and shape to deformed areas of the face
- fistula removal,
- Dental and prosthetic treatment - so she can finally speak, eat and live normally
It's a long, multi-step process. Each treatment is necessary. Each one exceeds the capacity of a single person.
Life in limbo
Today Magda eats mostly mixed meals and watered-down bread - so as not to irritate her fistula and lesioned mouth. Every bite is an effort, every conversation an obstacle.
Although she doesn't talk about suffering, it accompanies her every day. She doesn't ask for mercy, just a chance. A chance for normalcy, for a taste of food, a smile without shame and a conversation without pain.
