The disease took away everything familiar.
Continuous and heavy bleeding, which began in the spring of 2022, led to a diagnosis that revealed a world no one wants to see. Stage IV cervical cancer, metastases to the lungs, infiltration of the intestine. The disease that invaded Katarzyna's life uninvited changed every aspect of it from the very first moment.
Since then, she has undergone a series of operations and procedures that were difficult to bear, not only physically but also emotionally. Thoracoscopy with lung resection, stereotactic radiotherapy, subsequent cycles of chemotherapy, removal of the uterus and adnexa, Hartmann's procedure after the development of a fistula, stoma creation, as well as numerous procedures involving the bile ducts and gastrointestinal tract.
Each month brought further complications and more trips back to the hospital wards. Despite this, she continued onward, driven not by choice but by necessity.
When the body struggles and the world keeps demanding
This experience, filled with physical suffering, continued to test the limits of her endurance. The hopes placed in the treatment so far proved illusory. The results of a CT scan in August 2025 showed enlarged lymph nodes. The consultation concluded that the changes were inoperable and that immunotherapy was ineffective because the tumor did not respond to it.
Systemic treatment and chemotherapy remain, planned after further CT scans.
In January 2026, Katarzyna will undergo a check-up after undergoing multiple stages of treatment. It is a journey between treatment, responsibilities, and loneliness that can knock a person down.
A lonely battle on two fronts
Katarzyna has no siblings or partner. Instead, she has a mother who is struggling with progressive dementia and requires round-the-clock care. Every aspect of the day rests on her shoulders. Feeding, hygiene, her mother's safety, planning medication, organizing everything so that nothing is overlooked. On top of that, she works from the porch of her house, heated by a single electric panel. Work that has to support them both.
Above all else hangs the issue of eviction, which for months has cast a shadow greater than what can be borne in sickness.
One sentence, spoken quietly, sums up the reality of her everyday life:
"I have to take care of my mother and work to survive, even if it means neglecting my own health."
Everyday life that hurts
Her days resemble a maze in which almost every path ends in a wall. However, she must search for a way through, because not only her own life depends on her strength. There is no respite from pain, no escape from fatigue, no break from fear. And yet she gets up, because she knows she must.
Fighting for herself, she is also fighting for her mother, who has no one but her.
All that remains of the passions that once defined her are quiet memories. Ballet, theater, opera, foreign languages. Today, all of this has been pushed into the background by a reality in which the struggle for survival has become the only possible everyday life. It shouldn't be this way. We can change it.
