The hidden danger in numbers
The parents' attention was drawn to bruises appearing in places that could not be explained by children's play or carelessness. Soon, frequent nosebleeds and small petechiae scattered across the skin joined them.
The blood count test brought back results that were difficult to accept. With a normal level of around 150,000 platelets, Kamilka had only 5,000. She was immediately sent to the hospital.
In Jawor, she was diagnosed with severe thrombocytopenia. Immunoglobulins were administered. After four days, her platelet count rose to 118,000 and she was able to return home.
After a week, platelet levels dropped again to life-threatening levels.
The rhythm of hope and returns to the hospital
From that moment on, the family began to live in a repetitive pattern: hospitalization, infusions, improvement, return home... and another decline.
Ultimately, Kamilka ended up at Przylądek Nadziei in Wrocław with a platelet count of 21,000. The next day, it was down to 12,000. A platelet transfusion became necessary.
The girl underwent detailed diagnostics and a bone marrow examination. A full diagnosis is still pending, and her parents are waiting for the results, which will allow them to choose the appropriate treatment. Kamilka is taking steroids and has been referred to an immunologist and an endocrinologist.
Every test is a huge effort for her.
Kamilka struggles with sensory disorders. Auditory hypersensitivity and a lack of deep sensation make every needle prick, blood test, or medical examination a difficult experience for her
Screaming and crying are not acts of rebellion. They are a reaction to an overloaded nervous system and anxiety that a six-year-old cannot yet name or cope with.
The house was filled with anxiety.
Mom is on leave to take care of her daughter and doesn't know when she will be able to return to work. Her parents are living in suspense because the illness may become chronic, and the answers are still incomplete. Kamilka misses kindergarten, her friends, and her dad. She also misses her dog and cat, which remain part of a world that has been temporarily put on hold.
He's still a child.
She loves drawing and painting, playing with LEGO bricks, and spending time with animals. These simple activities give her peace and a sense of security. These small spaces of childhood help her get through the time spent undergoing tests and hospitalizations.
Waiting has become an everyday occurrence
Today, the family finds itself in a situation where medicine is still searching for answers, and every result could change the course of treatment. It is a time filled with uncertainty and paralyzing tension as they await the next number, which could drop to a life-threatening level from one day to the next.
