The disease has brought fear into everyday life.
The end of the school year and the beginning of the 2025 summer holidays brought changes that could not be explained by any obvious reason. Janek began to lose his appetite, became sleepy and withdrawn, as if the energy that had filled his every day was slowly fading away. His body weight decreased, and his involvement in daily chores and activities that had previously come naturally to him gave way to fatigue, lack of strength, and growing apathy. The symptoms appeared gradually, as if the disease were approaching cautiously, elusive, yet causing increasing anxiety. In July, it became clear that further diagnosis was necessary to understand the source of these changes. The results came suddenly and mercilessly. Acute leukemia with a mixed phenotype.
Exhaustive stages of treatment
The therapy includes protocol one A, treatment with desatinib, induction one A and one B, and consolidation in the HR block. Immunotherapy was also introduced, with the first cycle based on blinatumomab. The 14-year-old's body, although often at the limit of its endurance, must go through successive stages of treatment leading up to the most important point of therapy, which is the planned bone marrow transplant.
Between the hospital and home
Janek returns home only for brief moments, necessary not only for his body but also for his mind, which needs rest in the face of intensive treatment. However, even at home, the disease continues to remind him of its presence. His body remains burdened by both therapy and comorbidities, including celiac disease and kidney stones.

Janek's brother is waiting for him at home.
Ten-year-old Zygmunt, Janek's brother, tries to find his place in a reality he does not understand. Longing, anxiety, and uncertainty become part of his everyday life, and his parents try to keep an eye on his emotions as well.
This sentence captures the drama of families facing their child's illness. Love stretched between two sons, while being unable to be fully present for each of them.
Everyday life has become a chore
The whole family's life has been subordinated to one goal:to do everything possible to help Janek recover. His parents have suspended their professional activities and are on sick leave, subordinating each day to schedules of tests, hospitalizations, and consultations.
Support is needed
Janek's treatment requires many elements that are not covered by reimbursement. These include medications needed for subsequent stages of therapy, transportation between facilities, rehabilitation, and psychological care, which is necessary for both him and his family. Expenses accumulate with each passing month, and his parents, who are not working, are unable to cover them on their own.
Janek loves volleyball, cycling, Lego bricks, and rock music. His illness has put all of that on hold, but it has left him with a desire to return to it one day. His parents would like to be able to promise him that the task that seems endless today will one day be completed.
