Maybe it's nothing serious?
In mid-February , Gabrysia came down with RSV, a viral respiratory infection that can be particularly dangerous for children with weakened immune systems. Instead of getting better, anxiety set in because the test results were alarming. A drop in platelet count and petechiae appearing on her body were signs that something serious was happening inside her body. The time between tests seemed to drag on endlessly, and hope mingled with fear. Her parents held out hope until the very end that this was just a temporary problem. That hope faded on March 10, when the doctors delivered the diagnosis: acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Side effects
Today, Gabrysia is undergoing treatment. Chemotherapy has become a reality: a difficult and debilitating one. Her body is fighting not only the disease but also the side effects of the treatment. Each dose offers hope, but also brings side effects. Allergic reactions occur after the medication is administered. Additionally, she has developed steroid-induced diabetes, which has filled Gabrysia’s daily life with constant blood sugar checks and repeated injections. The results of her head MRI also caused concern.
Doctors must also consider Moya-Moya disease, which causes the blood vessels in the brain to gradually close off. The family is waiting for a neurosurgical consultation with the professor who previously operated on Gabrysia and will decide on further treatment.

Diagnosis history
Although Gabrysia is still so young, she carries the weight of many experiences on her shoulders. Her life has not been easy from the start; instead of a carefree childhood, she has faced nothing but challenges. She was born with Down syndrome and suffers from drug-resistant Lennox-Gastaut epilepsy, hypothyroidism, and a vision impairment. She was also born with a serious heart defect requiring surgery.
Despite all this, Gabrysia still manages to smile and shows remarkable strength every day.
Family support
Mom is with her every day. That’s where their daily life is centered right now. Meanwhile , Dad has stayed home to take care of Lena—Gabrysia’s 12-year-old sister—who, due to her sister’s health situation, needed the support of a psychologist. They see each other on weekends. Those brief moments together are priceless. Filled with emotion and longing, but also with hope that everything will work out.
Between home and the clinic
The family’s daily life also involves enormous financial challenges. Oliwia’s mother works, while her father is unable to work due to health issues.
The family lives far from the clinic. Each trip to the hospital costs about 400 PLN, and visits will be necessary as often as every four days. On top of that, there are the costs of treatment, special nutrition, and rehabilitation.
