Update

We are facing more difficult times
Kuba's health has deteriorated in recent weeks. The worsening of the illness meant that within a short time Hospitalization was required on three occasions. The treatment provides only temporary relief. The body reacts less strongly, and the effects don't last as long as they used to. What happens outside of treatment is also very difficult
It is becoming increasingly difficult to account for what is not recorded in the results
Frequent hospital stays are causing Kuba to lose touch with the everyday life he was still a part of just a short while ago. School goes on. So do relationships. Over time, something begins to emerge that’s very hard to bear. A gradual distancing from his peers. Kuba is increasingly experiencing what it’s like to be on the sidelines. At his age, that’s no small change. It is the loss of a space where a sense of belonging is fostered.
A world that’s hard to return to
Kuba can no longer be in the places where he used to feel confident and at ease. There are situations that stay with him for a long time. Words from peers that might otherwise have been ignored take on a completely different meaning today. This is the point at which the illness begins to affect not only the body but also one’s self-esteem.
These are times that call for special support
Kuba needs more than just medical treatment today. He needs someone to be there for him, to understand him, and to support him so he can get through this time when so many things are changing all at once. March 25, 2026

Before the illness appeared

Not so long ago, Jakub was a child who couldn't sit still. He trained soccer at the UKS Niemodlin club, took part in the Tymbark Tournament and other youth competitions. Sport was his natural language, his plan for the future and his everyday life, which brought order to his world.

This world existed until June 2021. Until the day he came back from training with a disturbing number of bruises, and a moment later, blood appeared from his nose. His parents drove him to the emergency room, not knowing that this trip would close one chapter of their son's life forever.

Diagnosis

Blood tests revealed dramatically low platelet levels. An immediate transfusion was necessary. The diagnosis came quickly and was relentless. Chronic immune thrombocytopenia.

It is a disease in which the body destroys its own blood platelets. A disease in which even a minor injury can lead to dangerous bleeding. A disease that forces a child to live in constant caution and tension.

"No one could tell us what tomorrow would bring. We were only told that we had to be careful about everything."
Constant returns to the hospital

The first platelet transfusion did not have a lasting effect. After a week , the results dropped sharply again. Jakub returned to the hospital, left, and then returned again after a short time.

A week in the hospital. A week at home. Then back to the hospital. That's how the following months went. No stability and no sense of security.

After that time, Jakub's mother began to seek help on her own. The family ended up at a hospital in Chorzów, where the boy was treated for about two years and underwent a bone marrow transplant. When the oncology and hematology ward was closed, Jakub was transferred to Przylądek Nadziei (Cape of Hope) in Wrocław, where he has been continuing his treatment for a year.

The treatment has stopped working.

The family was offered an innovative treatment program aimed at stabilizing platelet levels. For a long time, it seemed that the therapy was working. Jakub was admitted to the hospital less often. Cautious hope emerged.

This condition persisted for a year. Then everything collapsed. The results fell to the lowest in the entire history of the disease.

An urgent trip to the hospital and an attempt to transfuse platelets were necessary . However, during the procedure, severe abdominal pain occurred, forcing it to be interrupted. Jakub is currently back in the hospital. He is receiving intravenous steroids, which can only be administered in a hospital setting. After his discharge , he will have to continue drug therapy and remain under constant supervision by specialists.

Fear at every turn

Sport, which was the meaning of Jakub's life, became a threat. Every stumble, every bruise, every blow causes fear. His family, teachers, classmates, and the entire school environment function in a state of constant alertness.

His six-year-old younger brother saw what happened to his older brother. Today, he is afraid of sports. He is afraid of bruises. He is afraid of illnesses.

Mom runs a hair salon, but spends most of her time caring for Kuba. Dad works and shoulders the burden of supporting the family. Their everyday life is spent living out of suitcases. Home and hospital, constantly alternating.

Every day begins with the question of whether Jakub's platelet count will allow him to function normally. Every phone call from school causes fear.

Chronic immune thrombocytopenia does not provide clear answers. Instead, it causes constant anxiety and uncertainty about tomorrow.

It is not a disease that can be seen at first glance, yet every day it robs a child of the carefree nature of childhood, trapping them in a facade of normality that looks safe from the outside but is a silent prison on the inside.
