In seemingly ordinary complaints, cancer was waking up
Day after day, infections, treatment, temporary improvement is a scenario familiar to all parents.
This was also the case for David. A shoulder pain that appeared unexpectedly, followed by a fever, opened a natural path: a visit to the doctor, diagnosis, treatment. Everything seemed logical and explainable.
With the first symptoms , Dawid was taken to the hospital in Konskie, where the tests performed showed the presence of a tumor. For further diagnostics, they were rerouted to Kielce, where a follow-up ultrasound, X-ray, CT scan and the first biopsy were performed. The result did not confirm the presence of cancer cells. Doctors reassured them that it was a congenital lesion, something Dawid was born with and posed no threat.
The pain, however, kept recurring. Each episode ended with hospitalization, antibiotic therapy and temporary improvement. The parents, concerned about the lack of a clear answer, decided to seek help further.
They ended up in Lodz, where two more biopsy procedures and full diagnostics were performed, including PET and a bone trepanobiopsy. Just before Christmas, i.e. December 22, 2024, they heard the diagnosis: malignant bone and soft tissue cancer.
Even before the New Year, Dawid had a chemotherapy vascular port inserted and preparations for treatment began. Due to the separation from their daughter and the need to be together, the family decided to continue treatment in Kielce.
Hope in the operation
Intensive treatment has begun. Four cycles of chemotherapy were to prepare David's body for surgery, after which five more were scheduled.
David endured the therapy with remarkable strength. Despite afts, mouth burns, vomiting and exhaustion, he never complained.
In April 2025, he underwent extensive surgery to remove the tumor at the Institute of Oncology in Gdansk. Along with the tumor, doctors removed the sixth rib in its entirety, and the fifth and seventh ribs partially.
The procedure was successful, but the price was enormous.
A stay in the Intensive Care Unit, planned for three days, turned into three weeks. Every attempt at extubation ended in shortness of breath and fear.
It was three weeks full of vigilance, silence and silent prayer for each new breath.
Family apart, but together
This intense time has forced a complete rearrangement of family life. David has a seven-year-old sister, who also had to find her way in this difficult reality.
Mom, despite her own health problems and the need for psychiatric support, did not leave her son for a moment.
Dad, in order to provide for the family and at the same time take care of his daughter, worked night shifts.
During this time, the family was a huge support, helping to care for the girl.
Although she was surrounded by care and affection, separation from her parents was very difficult for her.
Help came from many directions - from relatives, friends and the school Dawid attended.
It was the school that gave him a special surprise, fulfilling his dream of a set of LEGO bricks, which Dawid has always loved. Since then, every completed chemistry class ended with just such a gift, another box of bricks that brought some peace and smiles into his world, reminding him that childhood still continues, although it looks different than it used to.
Daily life after treatment
Today Dawid is at home. Behind him are nine cycles of chemotherapy, surgery and the most difficult months of his life. Ahead of him are check-ups, examinations and rehabilitation.
Every trip to Gdansk or Lodz involves enormous effort and expense. The family continues to live in a rhythm of trips, tests and vigilance that never falters.
It's a daily life full of fatigue, limitations and fear of relapse, but also gratitude for every peaceful day and every moment where they can simply be together.
