Seemingly harmless symptoms

Children's Day, for four-year-old Victor as for most children, is a holiday to look forward to. It is a day full of excitement, gifts, fun and joy. For him, however, it also became the beginning of a journey that was to bring many difficult moments.

That June night Victor was roused from sleep by a severe pain in his legs. It was so severe that the boy, unable to stand on his own, cried out in pain. He was only soothed by painkillers, which allowed him to fall asleep again. The morning brought apparent relief. Everything passed, and Victor ran to the kindergarten with a smile and energy. In a few days, everyone managed to forget about the night incident.
When the fever appeared, no one connected it with the previous ailments. Even more so after the reassuring words of the primary care physician, who pointed to a simple infection.
On June 14, after a day outdoors, the pain and fever returned in full force. He was getting weaker and losing strength moment by moment. His parents, without waiting, went with him to the ED. Again tonsillitis was suspected, an antibiotic was administered, but despite treatment, Victor's condition did not improve.

Diagnosis

A subsequent medical consultation resulted in a recommendation to perform expanded diagnostics. Thanks to the vigilance of the family doctor, who knows Victor every day, the alarming symptoms were not trivialized. The test results, especially the CRP level, clearly indicated severe inflammation in the body. The boy was urgently referred to a hospital ward in Brochow, Wrocław.

Blood results showed as many as sixty percent of blood cells with a pathological structure.

Targeted tests left no doubt. Viktor was transported by ambulance to the Cape of Hope in Wroclaw, where blood results showed as many as sixty percent pathological blood cells. On June 18, the family heard the diagnosis: type II acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Treatment - immediately!

Chemotherapy, punctures, bone marrow and cerebrospinal fluid collection. The pace of the therapy that began was dizzying. Victor underwent the first stage of treatment, the so-called induction. His body was weakened, but responded well. It seemed that the situation had been brought under control and the most difficult time was behind him.

Treatment full of trials and complications

Just when the family was looking hopefully toward returning home, another unexpected blow came.

He developed a sepsis infection that could take his life within hours. Victor was immediately taken to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

For several days he was alone, away from his mother, among strange sounds and people. He longed, cried, didn't understand why he couldn't see her when he woke up at night. For his parents, it was a time of helplessness and paralyzing fear that they could not tame.
Eventually, doctors managed to control the infection. It was necessary to remove the central puncture - Broviak. After his condition was stabilized , Victor was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, where he slowly recovered.

Currently, the boy is on the second stage of treatment under the M protocol and is continuing chemotherapy. He again has a Broviac inserted, which allows safe and effective administration of drugs. The hardships of a long stay in the hospital are eased by the presence of mom or dad. At home, loved ones and the longed-for daily life, so free of fear and pain, await.

It doesn't take much to help this boy return to his home and daily joys.
