Donor search a chance at life
Sandra's treatment has been put on hold until a suitable bone marrow donor can be found. The medical team is considering a HAPLO transplant, or haploidentical transplant, in which a partial match of HLA antigens is sufficient. Blood samples have already been taken from the parents to see which of them can become donors. If this method fails, it will be necessary to start a search for an unrelated donor. The transplant is essential because without it, further treatment cannot be resumed. This is an extremely difficult time for the entire family. In the silence between tests and results, anxiety pulsates, but also hope and an unquenchable desire to live. October 17, 2025Struggle unfolded
In April, Sandra underwent three weeks of radiation therapy on her right humerus, where the cancer first revealed itself. It was a difficult but necessary stage to prepare her body for the fight ahead. In May, imaging studies were performed to assess the effectiveness of the treatment to date. In June - on the 5th of the month to be exact - a surgical operation was performed, during which the left adrenal tumor was removed. All this happened quickly, almost without a moment to catch one's breath, but each of these steps was necessary.
Intensive preparations for transplantation
After the operation, there was no time to rest. Sandra and her parents traveled to Warsaw, where she underwent MIBG scintigraphy - a key test to assess the presence of possible cancer cells spreading through the body. It's a test that tells doctors a lot, and tells them even more about how to direct further treatment. In parallel, the process of mobilizing stem cells has begun. It's a demanding but necessary stage before the upcoming transplant. Sandra is being given specialized medications to stimulate the marrow to produce the cells needed for later administration back after chemotherapy. This will be the toughest stage of treatment yet to come for her. June 18, 2025

The body did not recover because it was fighting not only the virus
Sandra went through severe type A flu, which severely weakened her body. After treatment, however, the pain did not go away. There was neither a fever nor a cough, just a persistent pain in her hand that grew stronger every day.
The family doctor did not trivialize the symptom. He referred Sandra to the hospital, where blood tests and x-rays were performed.
The result was surprising. A broken bone was found, even though no injury had occurred. This was the first sign that something very serious was going on in the child's body.
The fracture was just the beginning. The truth turned out to be much worse
Sandra was taken to the pediatric surgery department in Wroclaw, where further diagnostics were started.
Doctors wanted to understand why there was a non-traumatic fracture. The results brought the worst possible scenario. The broken bone was the result of cancer metastasis.
Sandra's body was developing a malignant childhood cancer - neuroblastoma. The parents were unable to accept this information. For a long time they hoped for a mistake, an error in the results, any other explanation - as long as it wasn't cancer!
Reality, however, gave them no illusions. The diagnosis was unequivocal and left no margin for hope that it was something less dangerous.
Chemotherapy
A word that paralyzes everyone. Sandra did not understand its meaning. All she knew was that it changed her daily life.
The childlike joy we must help preserve
Sandra is still smiling, though no one would be surprised if she suddenly stopped. Her parents are doing their best to keep that smile alive, but they know they can't do it alone. Support is needed! For treatment, travel, care and medical supplies that are not reimbursed.
