Until recently, Remek lived like many young people his age: he was studying, working, hanging out with friends, and making plans for the future. The illness struck suddenly and completely changed his life and that of his entire family. What initially looked like an unusual change in his kidney turned out to be a very rare and aggressive cancer. Today, Remek must fight again because the disease has returned.
A major change discovered by chance
It all began with imaging tests performed in September 2023. The ultrasound revealed a massive mass in the abdominal cavity—the mass occupying the space of the left kidney was as long as 23 centimeters. The doctors immediately recommended an urgent urological consultation.
Another CT scan confirmed a very serious problem. A tumor suspected of being cancerous was found within the affected kidney. For the family, this marked the beginning of a period of great anxiety and anticipation as they awaited further diagnostic tests.
Surgery and a difficult diagnosis
On June 11, 2025, Remek underwent major surgery to remove his left kidney along with a massive tumor. The procedure was performed using open surgery at the Urology Clinic in Łódź. It was only after histopathological examinations and specialized molecular diagnostics that doctors discovered that Remek was battling an extremely rare subtype of kidney cancer associated with FH gene deficiency—FH-deficient renal cell carcinoma.
It is a very aggressive and difficult-to-treat cancer. The family had hoped that the worst was behind them after the surgery. Unfortunately, in April 2026, the cancer recurred locally.
Life between school and illness
Despite his diagnosis, Remek tries to live as normally as possible. He is a freshman at the University of Łódź, works, spends time with his loved ones, and tries not to let his daily life fall apart. However, juggling his studies, work, and the fight against cancer is becoming increasingly difficult. His body is exhausted, and the constant consultations and tests require tremendous mental and physical strength.
His loved ones admit that they often find the illness even harder to bear than Remek does. He himself tries to stay optimistic and not dwell on the worst-case scenario, even though he knows he’s battling a very serious illness.
The hardest part is the uncertainty
The family is currently urgently consulting on further treatment in Warsaw. Once treatment resumes, a new treatment plan will need to be developed. The biggest challenge right now is the wait: for the doctors’ decisions, test results, and the opportunity to begin effective treatment. Remek’s younger sister continues to try to live as if the illness hadn’t changed their daily lives. The family is trying to maintain a sense of normalcy, even though everyone knows that a very difficult battle for Remek’s health and future has begun.
He just wants to live a normal life
Remek values ordinary moments most of all—time spent with family, friends, and loved ones. He enjoys good food, spending time with people, and the normal life of a young man, a life that his illness suddenly tried to cut short.
The funds raised will help cover the costs of specialist consultations, tests, transportation, non-reimbursable medications, psychological support, and daily living expenses during his treatment. We ask for your support for Remek. Every contribution gives him a better chance at further diagnosis, treatment, and the fight for the future he has only just begun to build.
