Leg pain that kept coming back
Nikodem is only three years old. Not long ago, his days were filled with play, curiosity about the world, and childlike energy that made every day a new adventure.
On January 24, 2026, however, the boy began complaining of severe pain in his legs. Concerned, his parents took him to the Emergency Department at the hospital in Opole. Doctors determined that the cause of his discomfort might be temporary arthritis.
A few days later, Nikodem had a check-up with his family doctor. Again, there were no signs of serious illness. However, his parents asked for a complete blood count to be performed, as Nikodem's father had suffered from leukemia in the past and knew how important it was to be vigilant.
The examination did not reveal any alarming changes at the time, so only pain relief treatment was recommended. After a few days, the symptoms subsided and Nikodem began walking again.
Return of pain and urgent diagnosis
Unfortunately, on February 27, the pain returned. This time it was so severe that the boy was unable to walk again. His parents took him to the Emergency Department at the hospital in Opole once more. This time, the test results were alarming. High CRP and elevated leukocytes prompted doctors to immediately decide to transport him to a specialist center.
Nikodem was taken to Przylądek Nadziei (Cape of Hope) in Wrocław, where detailed diagnostics began. An extended blood count, puncture, chest imaging, and tomography allowed doctors to make a final diagnosis. Nikodem was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
The first days of treatment
Treatment began on March 3, 2026. Steroid therapy was initiated first, and on March 10, the boy received his first chemotherapy.
Nikodem will spend the next few weeks in hospital. Doctors have planned at least thirty-three days of continuous hospitalization in Wrocław.
At this stage , a detailed plan for further treatment has not yet been finalized. The medical team is observing the boy's body's response to the first doses of therapy, as subsequent decisions regarding further treatment will depend on this.
A disease that affected the entire family
The diagnosis was a huge blow to Nikodem's family. His father had suffered from cancer in the past, so there was always a lingering fear that the disease might one day affect their children too. Unfortunately, today that scenario has become a reality.
Nikodem's mother had to quit her job so she could be with her son in the hospital around the clock. His father works and takes care of Nikodem's five-year-old sister, Paulinka, who misses her mother and brother very much.
The girl's grandmothers also help with her daily care and are a huge support to the whole family. The most difficult things today are the fear for Nikosia's health, the separation, and the uncertainty of what the next stages of treatment will bring.
The boy who loves DIY
Nikodem is a cheerful boy who is curious about the world. He loves tractors, fire trucks, and everything related to tools. He is most fascinated by drills and various devices that can be taken apart, repaired, or rebuilt. This is the world of a three-year-old who, instead of playing in the playground, has to explore hospital wards today.
Support that helps you get through treatment
The funds raised will be used to cover the cost of non-reimbursable medications, travel to hospitals and doctors, specialized diets, psychological support, and consultations with specialists.
Every bit of support becomes real help for Nikos and his family on their journey through treatment, which today requires enormous strength, patience, and hope.
