Behind Santa's smile is a story of great courage
Months of chemotherapy were the beginning of an unbelievable battle that Nikolai faced. He was given one of the strongest and most devastating therapies. The result? The tumor shrank and reached a size that qualified it for excision. This was the moment everyone had been waiting for, although the operation was one of the more complicated ones. In January 2024, Nikolai underwent surgery at a hospital in Wroclaw, Poland. Due to the extremely aggressive nature of the disease, Treatment was not completed after the operation. In addition to continued chemotherapy radiation therapy was also introduced, to destroy residual cancer cells. For almost two months, the boy was subjected to daily radiation, and each session required anesthesia. Nikolai endured it all with great strength. He knew that every day, although difficult, brought him closer to victory.Incessant suffering
After the completion of radiation therapy, it was time for convalescence. Burn wounds on the neck and esophagus made it difficult for Nikolai to drink, eat and even swallow saliva. He was weak and in great pain. In April 2024, the main treatment protocol was completed. Doctors decided to extend the therapy. Nikolai began maintenance chemotherapy divided into seven cycles.Hope, rehabilitation and dreams of normalcy
In mid-November 2024, Nikolai finished his maintenance chemotherapy. Today he is under constant observation, and further check-ups will be conducted at the Cape of Hope in Wroclaw. Despite the dramatic road he has traveled, Nikolai has not lost his childlike smile or energy. Everyday moments at home, playing with his beloved little sister, and shared moments with his dad give him joy again. January 25, 2025

The calm before the storm
In the summer of 2023, Nicholas celebrated his second birthday. Soon after, his parents noticed a small thickening on his neck. At first glance, it seemed harmless, perhaps an enlarged lymph node, a minor trace of childhood infections. However, as the days passed, the lesion began to enlarge, and anxiety grew. The clinic made a quick decision to refer the toddler to a hospital in Kielce, where an avalanche of tests began. An ultrasound, MRI, CT scan
and finally a biopsy revealed the beginning of a dramatic journey.
Unexpected diagnosis
In September, Nikolai and his mother were taken to the "Cape of Hope" in Wroclaw, one of the most important pediatric oncology centers in Poland. There, further, even more detailed tests were conducted. The final diagnosis was a blow to the family: a very rare, extremely aggressive malignant tumor called rhabdoid tumor. Already during the diagnosis, intensive chemotherapy was started, hoping to shrink the tumor to a size that would allow its subsequent - surgical - removal.
Hospital reality
The first days in the hospital ward were extremely difficult for Nicholas. Unfamiliar surroundings, unfamiliar faces, examinations performed under general anesthesia took away his childhood joy overnight, and his longing for his dad and sister only intensified his sadness. Despite this, Nikolai turned out to be an extremely brave boy who quickly found himself in his new reality.
Every zloty is a silent opposition to the disease
Nikolai has begun treatment, which will be long and expensive. Scheduled cycles of chemotherapy, surgery, and eventually long-term rehabilitation are the plan for the near future. Any form of support shown is a defiance of the disease and a chance to return to a childhood that was brutally interrupted.
