Update
After the operation, it turned out that viable cells remained in the margin of the removed lesion, forcing an extension of chemotherapy. Michael completed his intensive treatment in May 2024. Unfortunately, since the surgery, his bladder has not functioned properly, making daily life much more difficult. He requires regular catheterization every 2-3 hours, and struggles with frequent bladder infections, which presents additional challenges. Michal and his parents are waiting for a consultation with a specialist to help plan further treatment. Despite these difficulties, Michal has managed to return to school, where he enjoys the company of new classmates. Complications from chemotherapy are still evident, but Michal is persistently attending rehabilitation to gradually regain full function. His parents are doing their best to provide him with a substitute for a normal life, giving him support and surrounding him with care so that he can face his daily challenges. January 08, 2025
Explore the history of
He spends every free moment with his younger brother Nikos and together they train their soccer talents.
While staying with his grandparents, he takes care of the animals and helps on the farm. He is full of energy and has a great will to live!
However, he still has the most important fight ahead of him - the fight for life and health. The story of Michalek's illness began in January 2022. A simple cystitis turned out to be extremely serious in its consequences. The diagnosis was made after two months, when, due to a growing soft tissue tumor located in the prostate, Mikhail could not urinate.
That's when he was brought to "Cape of Hope" and since then our Hero has been fighting for life. Behind him are already 19 intensive cycles of chemotherapy and 31 radiation treatments. Parents believed that chemotherapy and radiation therapy would be able to defeat the "pest" in their son's body... Unfortunately, the tumor still did not give up and the only saving of Michalek's life turned out to be a drastic operation to remove the tumor along with his organs.
Michael dreams of returning to normalcy and living like other children his age.
He would like to go to school at last and be able to sit in a bench with his classmates, whom he has not had the opportunity to get to know better so far due to remote teaching. However, what he wants most already is to get rid of Broviac so he can go to the pool with his brother and return to soccer training.
In September, Michalek underwent a very difficult operation, from which he is still "recovering". Everything that has been worked through so far is basically gone. He is in pain. He has anxiety. PRES syndrome and epileptic seizures have appeared.
The boy is terrified, and his parents - probably even more so. Michalek has already been transported back to the "Cape of Hope", and it is likely that another chemotherapy will await him. The boy's parents believe that this will be the last, albeit extremely difficult, leg of the journey in saving the boy's life.
How complicated and expensive the rehabilitation and psychiatric treatment will be is not yet known. All the more important is the support Michael and his parents need now.
