"The biggest challenge is not to give in to negative thoughts. I hold on to the fact that I have someone to live for." - Maja
At first, everything pointed to a cyst.

Maja immediately consulted her doctor about a slight change she felt in her breast. The change was diagnosed as a cyst, which was not a cause for concern. This diagnosis was repeated over the following months. Time passed, and the lump grew larger and larger, until it was even noticeable under her clothes.
Further diagnostics finally provided an answer that ended the period of uncertainty in one sentence: triple-negative breast cancer in stage IIIb with a BRCA1 mutation.

Treatment could no longer be postponed.

In the summer of 2025 , Maja was rushed to the hospital in Zgorzelec. The doctors decided to start treatment immediately. There was no time to delay— the tumor was too large.
A port was implanted, the necessary tests were performed , and the first preoperative chemotherapy was administered on the same day.

Not all chemicals look the same

Initially, Maja tolerated the treatment well and tried with great determination to combine it with her everyday life outside the hospital. She continued to work, took care of her home, and found time for her passions.
The change came when the treatment switched to so-called red chemotherapy.
Her body, which had previously endured the therapy so bravely, suddenly refused to cooperate. She experienced extreme exhaustion, problems with concentration, and difficulty focusing her thoughts. For someone whose work is based on analysis and precise planning, this was a particularly difficult experience.
As she herself says, at some point she stopped recognizing herself in what was happening to her.

The hardest thing is to look your own children in the eye.

Maja is the mother of five-year-old twins.
Children are very quick to sense changes in the adult world. The girls saw that their mother was weak, that she needed to rest more often and didn't always have the strength to play with them.
One of the daughters began to complain of stomach aches every day. She had nightmares in which the same fear that her mother would die kept recurring.
Despite enormous care and efforts to make the girls feel safe, the illness affected the emotions of every member of the household, robbing the family of their sense of peace.

The operation that closed the first chapter

On February 4, 2026, doctors performed a double mastectomy with reconstruction.
After months of treatment, she went into full remission. It was the most eagerly awaited news, one that suddenly changes reality and brings color back into life.
Today, Maja is recovering from the surgery. She is still undergoing further cycles of immunotherapy, which, fortunately, are reimbursed. She is slowly regaining her strength and thinking more and more about returning to work and her normal life.

The shadow of illness does not disappear completely

Triple-negative cancer has one characteristic that doctors talk about very openly—it can come back.
That is why the attending physician recommended extensive genetic testing. The results of these tests will allow for the rapid selection of targeted treatment in the future, which is less destructive to the body than classic chemotherapy.
In the case of this disease, response time is of the utmost importance. The results of such tests allow doctors to act immediately, without wasting weeks on further diagnostic investigations.
These tests are not reimbursed. They cost around €5,000.

Small arms are the greatest strength

After the operation, Maja returned home, where her husband was waiting for her . He had stayed with the family during her recovery to help look after the girls.
However, her greatest strength comes from completely ordinary moments, when her five-year-old twins hug her and affectionately call her "our sunshine."

The most beautiful scenario

Maja dreams of a normal future. She dreams of returning to work, hiking in the mountains, horseback riding, and never having to tell her children that their mother is sick again.

Today, he is asking for help in conducting research that will enable doctors to prepare the best possible treatment strategy for the coming years.
