Between illusory peace and the truth
The spring of 2025 promised to be wonderful. The end of the school year was approaching, the days were getting longer, and meetings with friends filled every spare moment. Ot, the ordinary life of a seventeen-year-old.
The first worrisome signs came in April in the form of pain and swelling in the left testicle. The diagnosis sounded reassuring: hydrocele. For a few months, calm returned.
In July, however, the pain returned. It was stronger, more persistent and more difficult to bear. Hematuria also appeared. It was a signal that this time it was something more serious. After consulting with a urologist, Maciek was referred to the hospital ward of the University Clinical Center in Gdansk.
On September 2, 2025, hospitalization began. A few days later there was an unequivocal diagnosis: striated cell myxosarcoma of the testis with locally advanced infiltration. Malignant tumor, rare and extremely aggressive.
Urgent treatment
After the diagnosis, treatment was started immediately. A tumor biopsy, bone marrow trepanobiopsy, cystoscopy, catheter and vascular port were performed. The tumor infiltrated the left ureter and blocked urine outflow from the kidney, so amputation was necessary.
Maciek was classified as very high-risk. Doctors implemented intensive salvage chemotherapy in a regimen of VCR + DOXO - a therapy that was tough, but offered hope.
The treatment involved tremendous strain on the body. There were fevers, drops in blood results, painful mouth ulcers that made eating impossible and required parenteral feeding. Blood transfusions were also required several times.
An MRI of the head showed no changes, but a CT scan of the chest revealed small nodules in both lungs, which remain under constant observation. Each test result becomes a benchmark for the next day, and every little improvement is a reason for hope.
Difficult everyday life
Since his diagnosis , Maciek has spent most of his time in the hospital. When the results allow, he goes home for a few days to feel at least a shadow of normalcy. These are moments that are hard to satiate, as they are always accompanied by the awareness that in a moment he will have to return to the ward.
The boy's mother has been raising her children on her own for thirteen years. The boy's dad died when he was just four years old. The burden of the disease, which has fallen on her shoulders, requires daily strength and many sacrifices. Although she is supported by her two adult daughters, she is by Maciek's side around the clock. She gave up her job to be with him in the hospital, listening to the diagnosis, keeping vigil at night and giving encouragement when her son is running out of strength.
In search of treatment opportunities
The plan is to have surgery to remove the tumor and the affected testicle, followed by implantation. The next step will be radiation therapy.
In parallel, a sample of the tumor has been sent to Germany for genetic testing to help determine targeted and tailored therapy for the individual's tumor profile. This is a chance for more effective and less devastating treatment.
